Nokna,

Usually when I move around in the Sois of Soi Bangla, I get dragged by TGs into bars, they show me their boobs and panties, they force me to play games I cannot lose, make me pay drinks which are not for me, let me eat their boobs and cover me with lipstick. But the navy is untouchable, that is why I said they are cool, I was not serious...!

I agree with you Nokna...

Sad but true - whenever the any of the Yankie armed forces arrive things tend to spill over! (My opinion made from observations in Sydney)

I really wish we could keep issues of nationality off this board especially as I feel some people have slight biases which show through in these discussions. And as someone who proudly served honorably in the US armed forces and knew many fine people who did also I admit that I don't like to hear generalizations about US servicemen. ( Mind you I never liked the "Squids" anyway )

HOWEVER: When I lived in Pattaya I hated to see the US Navy come in and I certainly saw many of them behave in ways that disgraced their branch (Navy) and to some extent their country. They act like fools and cretins. Having said that, since time immemorial sailors have always been infamous for their behavior on Shore Leave and furthermore, to a great extent they are encouraged by many BGs to behave wildly; neither of those facts excuse disrespectful behavior but puts it in a bit of context. Mostly the sailors act like asses out of ignorance rather than malice -- not to mention that they've been on a ship for a long stretch of time -- though those things aren't adequate excuse either.
Finally I'd like to point out that I've seen both Aussie and British servicemen behave badly on leave; it's not exclusive to Yanks. Ý

Absolutely....during my long tenure in Phuket the only thing the US Navy did to screw us up was put the prices up and put our favourite girls off limits for a few days. I always found their onsure discipline excellent...if not their constant whooping, high 5'ing and boasting irritating as f_ck. British Navy only came once.....docked in Phuket Town and few were seen in Patong. The Australian Navy were a disgrace.....and not shy about hitting the girls back either.....absolute disgrace.

For sure!

My opinions of the Americans have only been driven from what I have seen here in Sydney. I have no idea how they act elsewhere (and nor do I pretend to) but I will tell you with living near the only Naval Base in Sydney where Warships dock I know when a foreign Navy is in town (just happens to mainly be American) and nightclubs, bars, pubs, etc become no go zones.

With a relative in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) I hear all the sad stories involving Australian Sailors. Obviously, some you can't be proud of...

Like I clearly stated in my previous post, my opinion was purely made from observations while they were in Sydney.

MrJoe, I'm hardly biased! I more like you in that I never really like them anyway (regardless of where they come from)

Mr N:

I actually didn't have you in mind as I was thinking of other threads on which you did not participate and I haven't seen any posts by you that seemed biased -- except you did agree with a post which only specified Yanks and your post did the same.

as i said i have nothing against Americans, wether they be Navy or not.
just saying a saw a few behaving in a way which i thought was unacceptable.
and because of it,the bar oqners complained and their bars were made off limits to servicemen.

i have never seen any other nationality in Phuket, but can believe they are no different.
while i can understand their excitement on having a bit of shore leave after a whule sailing the deep blue sea,why a few have to act the way they do is a mystery to me.

it's not as though they will have a hard time finding a beer and a woman.
and it's not as though there are'nt enough women to go round.

It's not quite a mystery to me but I sure can't relate to it either Nokna. On the other hand I can't relate to many of the things I see Falangs do in LOS -- not just sailors and definitely not just Yanks.

I think that one problem with "groups" is that the "group" identity provides some cover for behaviour that normally the members will not engange in, if alone by themselves. ÝThis is only when the members of the group get together.

I dont know if I am making sense. What I am trying to say is that when different people get together under the umbrella of a common denominator well identified, they hide under its identity. Be the fans of a football team, or the attendants to a Star Trek convention, or the players of a Rugby team, or the sailors of a specific navy, anything. Ý

Lets use the example of a Rugby team, its players would go out on their own with their own friends, and it would be a normal night out. ÝHowever, lets put the players together as a team going to a bar after a game, and the same individuals would create more havoc than when out with their everyday friends. ÝWhy? I think there is a feeling of anonimity (spelling?), ie all members share the blame together fot the actions of any individual, thus diluting the feelings of responsibility towards the rest of society. Ýe.g. it is not "me" being bad, it is "a rugby player from the team", and if there are 20 of us, my share is small. ÝMake this 2,000 sailors or 20,000 fans of a football team .... and it gets easier to see the potential escalation for causing havoc.

I think I may be talking non-sense on this attempt to play amateur social behaviour scientist. ÝI better stop.
