Just is case anyone is wondering how quickly something like this can be cleaned up.... in 1991 Mt Pinatubo blew in the Phillipines and dumped a shit load of ash (fifteen to fifty centimeters thick) all over the islands, including the Subic Bay Naval base. We pulled in to port 2 weeks after the eruption and Magsaysay drive (road with beer bars and go go's) had been completely cleaned up. They wanted that flow of $$$ to continue. Word had it that every bar girl was out there lending a hand.

Except for the occasional collapsed building you could not tell there was an eruption. Off the strip there was still ash and on base they were cleaning up the softball fields with shovels and wheel barrows. My prediction is that in 2 weeks everything around Patong will be back to "normal" other than buildings utterly missing.

My deepest sympathy to anyone losing a loved one, they are the only thing that will never return to normal again.

Just came across this:

From the Nation Newpaper: Warning rejected to protect tourism

I understand that to cry "wolf" may be a bad thing, specially if it happens to often, but hind sight being what it is, maybe some sort of alert should have been done.

Good god, who designed the HTML on that site... but I digress:

"“The very important factor in making the decision was that it’s high [tourist] season and hotel rooms were nearly 100-per-cent full. If we issued a warning, which would have led to evacuation, [and if nothing happened], what would happen then? Business would be instantaneously affected. It would be beyond the Meteorological Department’s ability to handle. We could go under, if [the tsunami] didn’t come,” said a source who attended the meeting."

Someone stating that 'tourist season' was an important factor in making the decision to say nothing is not just typically stupid, but almost close to criminal negligence (of course, nothing will happen) - that is, if this actually happened.

Why would the meteorological dept. be responsible for for financial consequences of its statements? Could they not equally be held responsible for their silence in this matter, and thus the cost of the damage be laid at their feet?

It seems the finger pointing is already going on - which is unfortunate.

I really think the media should concentrate more on aid, and assistance, instead of fingerpointing. People lives right now in that region are tough enough, as it is.

Like everyone else here I'm watching the news updates and feeling terribly saddened by the huge loss of life and human suffering that's taken place - not just in Thailand, but in all the areas affected.

One thought occurs to me though. Imagine the death toll in Phuket if this Tsunami had struck late afternoon when the beaches are packed with thousands. Or late evening when all the beachfront restaurants and bars are full to the rafters. It really doesn't bear thinking about. But for the grace of a few hours it could have been ten times worse.

"Celebrity"?

Never bloody heard of her. How does she merit a mention on this topic? No one would give a toss about her if she was ugly. The least mentioned about her the better.

She was swept away but survived.. Her boyfriend may still be missing or dead.

Agreed though.. Just cause she is totty does not really warrant a mention.

Gyaos
Just so you know, Gyaos still plans to go to the LOS in March. Tourism did not drop off with me.

Just a note, that plate is still generating earthquakes/aftershocks in the upper 5's and lower 6's everyday. Not strong enough to create a tsunami (we would need upper 7's for that), but they are pretty powerful.

I read The Nation article, which was "pumped" just a little in North America on TV for show: "If we issued a warning, which would have led to evacuation, [and if nothing happened], what would happen then? Business would be instantaneously affected"

Actually, if the warning was issued, it would have increased business in the long run. Safety, even if the warning acts like a drill. Now that they know the consequence, I hope they learn from it and *invest* into a perfect system around the Thai sea borders, have escape routes, everything. Good for the economy, good for the government and REALLY good for tourism. Thailand will pull through from this faster than anywhere else.

Gyaos.
