You've done what you could and that's all that matters. The brits have donated over 20m million quid in just around 48 hours...that will go a long way if properly utilised.

I used to stay at the spanking new Baan Boa Resort which is about 20 metres from the sea on Patong. The entrance is open concept and the reception area is unprotected. There are 2 feisty and gorgeous (well, at least one is) young girls who work there, opposite them sits a real cutie who runs her travel agent business plus an indian tailor shop. Just beyond them lies the pool, which has heaps of people around it that time of the morning.

I used to be able to see the waters clearly from my cabana on the ground floor (the hotel has 4 storeys). If the waves really rose to 4-5 storey height as I have read, not one of those people would have stood a chance.

At that time the restaurant is buzzing....even though it is on ground level, it is behind a wall, so you cant see the beach....those people wouldnt even know what hit them.

MISSING PEOPLE

For those of you looking for missing people in Thailand, these two websites may be useful.

http://www.familylinks.icrc.org/thailand/locate (the IRC has similar websites for other countries)

You would expect the two sites would be linked and share the same information, but just in case they don't below is the Thai one.

To look for survivors, you may want to go here:

Here are some pics of the clean up going on in Patong.
It's rather amazing how fast the people are trying to get their lives back on track.

Like many people I am booked to go in late Feb but was hesitating.

I will still go allthough it may not be the happiest of holidays I think that by spending my money will be of the greatest help I can be. ( I have given to the appeals as well)

Thanks for that link, it cheered me up a bit to see the upto date situation.
It just makes me feel full of admiration for the Thai people.

Anyone got a feel for what the final body count will be in Phuket?

This whole thing is a tragedy covering all news flashes here in Norway.

Norway still has about 500 reported missing in the Phuket area. My thoughts goes to everyone affected by this tragic event.

I saw on TV today: My neighbour country Sweeden still has about 3500 missing persons listed. That is just under 1/1000 of the entire population!!

The current total for Khao Lak alone is 1000 bodies recovered, more than 4000 missing, now presumed dead.
The overall total for Thailand is expected to be over 8000.
This is trivial in comparison with Aceh or Sri Lanka, but gets publicity because all the sites hit were major tourist resorts.
Khao Lak, by the way, is completely devastated, and, I am told by an architect/builder friend, unlikely to be re-built.

Why?...

the next tidal wave is statistically not going to hit in the next fifty years and Thailand tourism is booming...
