I would tend to agree with that opinion. The damage of the tsunami was extensive and the loss of life is absolutely horrible. However, I do not believe that this is something that Thailand cannnot recover from, and just prior to all the destruction I saw what I considered to be a lot of tourists on my last trip. Not too many fellow Americans, but many other folks were there just enjoying themselves.
Certainly some will be bothered by the Tsunami and will not visit SEA for a while, but others, like most of us, won't think twice about it once things are back to normal (or even earlier in some cases). Now, if I could just get a few more days of vacation and a nice low fare I'd be all set.

Update 1st January Patong Beach
Well Patong is now pretty well back to normal apart from thehotels and restaurants along the beach road, Soi sea Pearl and the very bottom part of Soi Bangla.
Plenty of beer, food, girls and Katoeys. The only thing missing is the Tourists.
I arrived on Christmas day, watched the Tsunamis roll in on the 26th and have been having no problems at all.
There may still be problems on Phi Phi and further up the coast but the clean up in Patong has been good.
There is now so little to see that the TV companies have been filming the temporary rubbish tip the authorities have made on an empty building site and making out that it is a scene of destruction being searched.
The only shortage seems to be beach umbrellas and sun beds.

If you believe the publicity Thailand received was NOT because it is a tourist site, contrast the foreign media interest in Khao Lak (body count and pictures every day) with that given to Ban Nam Khem, a fishing village just north of Khao Lak. Ban Nam Khem was totally devastated, body count in the 000's, but until January 2 had not received a mention in the foreign press.
