I've driven a few times from Bkk-Phuket and back, good fun with a few mates, did the bus journey once, it was Ok but I spent as much on beers and taxis as the flight would have cost. Good for an experience though!

I took the night Bus BKK-Phuket in March this year and the trip was terrible. The "VIP" bus was actually just like a normal bus with no extra room for legs, contrary to the publicity. I had to change bus at 4am in Surat Thani while the rest of the people was driving direction Samui. You get sorted out thanks to a sticker you have to wear on your shirt without the thai personnel explaining you what's going on, which makes you feel like a sheep. Arrival was in Phuket Town, so I had to take another Bus again to Patong (20 Bahts but starting from another place in Phuket town). A tuk-Tuk offered me 150 Bahts for Phuket Town-Patong but I declined.
I can't remember the name of the company but we left from a road along the railway station in Bangkok, not from the bus terminal. I had booked from the Grand President travel agency.

that doesnt sound too good. But there are actualy warnings about private bus services on the thai website and on many private sites. So i'm hoping the government vip bus will be a better journey.

You got stitched up....there are plenty of buses direct from BKK to Phuket with real good facilities.
Sounds like you bourght it in Khaosan and got ferried south on the backpacker express.

It's a strip of bars at "Karon center", nothing special but anyway it there if you lazy heading to Patong etc.
