It seems to me that the Tai gov are playing down the amount who lost thier lives in this disaster.
Best they tell the truth or they will lose tourism forever

I think maybe you don't understand Thai wishful thinking

the International news are reporting the amount of people dead & missing or assumed dead

The Thais will assume those missing are alive, until they see/find their bodies

does anyone know if HKT/Phuket airport is open for business ??

Yes I totally understand Thai wishfull thinking.
I have been married to a Thai for 5 years
I just thought that in in this case the gov would drop it and get real as most Thais do in an emergancy.
My wife has been phoning a friends in Phuket all day she was not satisfied until she got through to her and she was worried sick. She is (my wife) the most mai pen rai person you could meet.
That didnt stop her calling her friend for 12 hours with no reply and worriyng like hell.
Maybe you dont understand Thai wishful thinking

i think you better calm down with the 'tude fella

You've obviously not been paying attention to my posts & haven't a clue who I am

I've been living her for 10 years, surrounded by Thais every day, not just 1 Thai wife

& known the language & customs for longer than that

I see you're a virgin user here, so I'll give you a break, signed up since December 18th 2004

edit in : this is also AndySoHandy's 1st post in the forum

anyway, here's the website that the news stations here in LOS are saying is where you can check the status of the casualties due to the quake/wave

I actually knew some people who died there, a young lady & her sister

http://ems.narenthorn.or.th

You'll need a Thai font to view it properly, well so your wife can view it properly

right now, the site lists 236 casualties

My remark from before was more about the international news, they will paint the picture darkest from the beginning, like on Sept 11, CNN was reporting a possible 7,000 dead based on the capacity of the building

and what's not to understand about the optimism ?? , I summed it up in my 1st post

I am sitting here in the US watching the coverage on the US media and yes, they are sensationalizing it as usual. The pictures look horrific, but what they are doing is mixing up the video from Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. It is hard to know exactly who was hit hardest. They seldom identify where the video was taken.

I had one good friend that was there in Phuket. He finally left a message that he was ok. He wasn't in Patong and said where he was it wasn't too bad although they were evacuated out of his hotel overnight.

Well, it's not like the average American has any clue where SEA is, let alone where each country lies and who lives there. Honestly, I have yet to discover what purpose the ever more conseravtive American media serves. All I ever see on American news channels is yellow journalism (Scott Peterson, anyone?), thinly veiled stock tips (mostly pro, rarely con) and pointless purchasing suggestions for folks with more money than sense. Don't forget America's motto.

Pride Through Ignorance

This country has its head so far up its ass that I've actually been looking into moving to the 3rd world. How bad can your own country get before you feel like leaving forever? And no, I don't hate Western women. I hate the hypocritcal evangelical christian conservatives who are turning the coolest country on earth into the laughing stock of the entire planet. f*** Ignorance!

LY: I see by your cutting comments above that you are trying to make new friends again...

That's what make this forum worthwhile.. The brotherly love we all exude to one another...

The best one has to be "You've obviously not been paying attention to my posts & haven't a clue who I am "

My question is two part:
(1) Why should he/they?
(2) Who gives a f***?

You da dude wid da tude...
Have a nice day and chill out.
Yaa'll come back now... Ya hear!

The most imortant thing is that fellow human beings have suffered and are still suffering...

Dear Brothers,

As you can imagine, this newbie looking forward to my first trip to LOS next week has been watching this story closely. This evening in the states we got extensive pictures from the Phuket area with commentary from a Brit journalist who was vacationing there. To my mind the most interesting comment he made was this: several hours after what seemed like a couple of mild earthquake tremors, the tide suddenly went out further than anyone could remember. The entire coastline was altered. People, including this reporter, were intrigued and started walking out farther and farther to see where the ocean had gone. That's one reason so many people got caught in the first wave...he said one moment the water was ankle deep and then literally the next moment it was shoulder deep and he was driven violently back to shore. It was not like the giant wall of water you imagine from watching disaster movies (although I understand that a couple of the subsequent waves had that effect), but rather like a bathtub being filled in impossible fast forward.

So if I've learned anything from this, it's that if the tide goes out abnormally far, it's probably coming back in the opposite direction and with equal abnormalcy. Probably not the best time to go walking out to sea.

My prayers for all those affected by this tragedy.

Luke

I am one lucky bastard.

I flew to Phuket on the 17th with the intention of staying in Patong for 10 days. However, once there I decided to cut my trip short by a few days and return to BKK for Xmas. My hotel was the Salathai which is in close proximity to the beach. My room was on the ground floor.

It now seems that many unfortunate people drowned in their hotel rooms when the Tsunami struck. I suspect that the Salathai was badly affected because of its location and would be very surprised if no one lost their lives there. Could so easily have been me if I had not changed my plans at short notice.
