I must be weird. Over 4000 killed in the southern part of my country against around 400 in southern Thailand. Yet I catch myself worrying more about Phuket and PhiPhi than my own country. The few days I spent in Phuket a couple of years back were incredibly heavenly. And to think that those crowded merry roads I trode on, those mysterious bylanes I explored, those majestic isalnds I visited are today wrecked beyond imagination is depressing. Maybe I am not a good son of my own country -- because my bonnie lies over the ocean.

I WAS THERE.
I was reclining on Nai Harn beach on the south tip of Phuket at 10.00am when the sea was suddenly sucked out for about 100 meters. It was a weird sight and everyone was wandering around thinking, "what the f*** is going on here?" when the water suddenly came back again and again, further and further up the beach. I managed to run up to the back of the beach to higher ground, was just about to move my motorcycle when the biggest wave (although I didn't know it at the time) came up and just took my motorcycle away with it. That's when I really panicked because no one knew what was happening or how big the waves were going to get. Luckily they didn't get bigger after that but they kept surging backwards and forwards for at least another hour.
One poor guy was swept away and killed (I saw him later when I went looking for my motorcycle) and it could have easily been me.
I later managed to go through Kata, Karon and Patong and they were all heavily damaged although the bulk of the hotels and businesses (the ones further inland) are all fine.
What Phuket needs most of all now is your patronage so it can recover so please don't think about cancelling holidays or anything.

Oh well.
That was just my idea to try to help the local people. I saw many businesses and livelihoods swept away yesterday. Another important point is what will happen to all the bargirls now they have fewer bars to work in and fewer customers.
I saw many people camped out on the sides of the roads, presumably because they lost their homes.
I'll definitely try to help the local economy by drinking more beer Chang.

I picked a fine day to go and relax at the beach! The first time for about 4 months!
It was a very strange experience that I don't want to go through again. When the tide suddenly went out 100 metres half of me said, "something is very wrong here, I think I should move" but the other half said, "I wonder what's going to happen next?" so I decided to stay. Then I finally moved when I was up to my waist in water surrounded by floating deckchairs.
The scary part was there was no indication in the sea that anything was happening and the water just kept coming up the beach higher and higher with each subsequent wave.
Lucky there was only one death, too.

My gf and I am are shocked and appalled.....about it..
The German newscast report right now...officials spoke 300 dead on Phuket..no information from Ko Phi phi..too windy, that boots could arrive it...
The German goverment send help to the involved countries. As well air planes to bring German toursits home..
