How sad, and I was just there a few weeks ago. Checked my email and had all these messages from friends wanting to know I was OK. That was the only way I found out about it as I am now in Vietnam and gettting little news.
Guess I won't be going back there at the end of my trip as I had thought about it. Best to give them a little time to clean up and recover.
Now I wish I had gotten the phone numbers of a couple girls I had there just to be able to check they are OK.

According to british news..so far 839 dead as of 9:11am GMT in Thailand alone and thousands injured. The initial Thai predictions were well under the actual casualty figures (British press suggest that from the devestation in western thailand that casualty figures may be double this estimate )
To the members who were considering going to Phuket still....consider this... Patong has no electricity, inadequate fresh water supplies, buildings damaged beyond repair, bodies floating in the sea, the threat of further tremors and waves, beach is a mess, whole hotels have been washed away....
Now if you look at areas of the carribean where the major hurricanes occurred earlier this year...they are still recovering from that and buildings/beaches are still badly damaged...I dont see phuket etc getting back on their feet and ready for welcoming tourists for at least a couple of weeks.
The fronts of todays british newspapers are all showing patong beach road absolutely wrecked...its like some sort of bad dream.
My heart goes out to those who know of others who lost their lives in this tragedy and those still waiting to hear from the many loved ones that are still missing.

Horse Shit.. I am in Patong.. Electricity in all areas except beach Rd and Bangla is fine.. Water seems fine.. No bodies flaoting around.. Hell my broadband connection has been up the entire time without a glitch...
Bars will be open again in Soi Eric tonight (Mai Tai Nicke has stated thats his plan) even without electric.. Nanai is normal..
Despite the damage Thai's always 'get on with it' I predict most of Bangla will be open within a week.. Beach Rd will take a lot longer to repair..

Good to hear that things are already getting up and running again. The bodies were being pulled out of the seas just off the coast of phuket as seen on skynews... Very difficult to tell what is going in in all areas of thailand from just watching tv. Its good to hear whats happening on the ground there,

Whew ! Tsunami during the X-Mas/ New Year holiday season !!... my sympathys go out to all that lost lives and loved ones. Regrets as to thier property and ruined vacations. No amount of insurance can replace lost lives ever.
To the ones that made it and the rest of the Bros over there best wishes as to recovery and the help you'll surely give and recieve.
What a disaster fo all of the southern Asian islands.
Red Cross and our USA armed forces better get its ass outta Iraq to lend a helping hand where really needed.
Our governments better step the @#$%$% up on this one or theyre all fired.

Any news of The Patong Merlin Hotel, I stayed there last year, also the Irish Bar down the other end of the Beach Road opposite The Salsa Cocktail Bar.
