Thais marry into 'slavery' in Japan - Marriage 'a tool for human traffickers'

The number of Thai women lured into marrying Japanese men, only to end up as domestic slaves or forced into prostitution, is increasing, a women's shelter has warned. Social workers at the Tokyo-based Help Asian Women's Shelter said marriage has become a convenient tool for human traffickers to lure Thai women, particularly uneducated women from poverty-stricken Isan who want a better life.
Some face the prospect of becoming domestic slaves for men who simply want to find someone to take care of their elderly, often disabled mothers. There are cases of domestic violence, and of women being dumped or forced into prostitution after their mothers-in-law die.
The shelter, which has helped dozens of Thai women over the past three years, is sounding the alarm about this form of human trafficking, which it says is increasing.
One social worker said the Thai women enter Japan legally after signing marriage certificates with Japanese men which entitle them to a one-year visa.
She said many marriages are arranged by brokers, who often work out of travel agencies.
Some Japanese men contact the brokers, asking them to help find wives. Brokers send women's photos to the men over the Internet.
Once they decide on a woman, they make a first deposit, from 80,000 to 100,000 baht, into a broker's bank account as a guarantee. Part of the money, the social worker said, goes to the prospective wife for preparations and travel arrangements.
She said the women are required to study Japanese language and culture, normally for about one year, as part of the preparation process.
The men then travel to Thailand to see the women in person, arrange the wedding and make traditional payments to the woman's family.
''The situation becomes worse because these women are forced to sign contracts in the Japanese language, which state they cannot leave the new families no matter what. If they breach the contract, they are required to return the money they received to the brokers,'' she said.
Those who managed to escape have found that their families in Thailand were harmed by the brokers until they got their money. She said the shelter has been closely working with Japanese authorities and the Thai embassy in Japan to rescue the women if asked for help.

This imprisonig of young girls is rife.
Although not having lived in the U.K. for years, I do know that in the 80's and 90's, London had, and probably still does have, many girls who come from all parts of the world, some as students, some as 'au pairs'
and others who were enticed into situations in which they surrrendered their passports, only to be kept under lock and key and the threat of reporting them to the authorities.
It is a form of slavery and is maintained by feeding the girls fear of being sent to prison and punished. Some try to escape, so the authorities only know of the tip of the ice-berg. And some are further buried by being kept in houses owned by men who enjoy diplomatic immunity. I have never understood that dispensation from being answerable to the law of the land.
Human trafficking is big business, especially these days.
This is just a facet of an immense problem.
I would suggest that anyone of the brothers here, who gets to hear of a girl intent on travelling to another country, to advise her never, ever, ever to surrender her passport to anyone except to an offical in an office of authority. This sounds a small ineffectual measure, but it might just help somebody somewhere.

My TG was about to go and work in the UK when I met her. She had already surrendered her passport to a 'broker' in Bangkok. The cost of the visa was 1 million baht, she was expected to work this debt off before she would start earning for herself.
Luckily I managed to persuade her not to go. She never did get her passport back though, ended up reporting it lost to get another one.
Her friend who did go and I believe is still there, worked off her fee in 2 months.
A few months after we were watching the news which showed a police bust in London, in which a stream of TG's were being 'freed' from a brothel. I said see that could have been you. She replied that they probably were ok with what they were doing, but it is standard practice if the authoritys get involved to make out you were there against your will!
On a side note I have come into contact with a fair few TG's working in the Middle East. Most have also had to surrender their passports to a mammason on arrival until they have worked off their fee (anyhting from 500K to 1.5 million baht). As well as having to pay for their food and accomodation.
Some are doing very well and quickly pay off their fee, others are at their wits end, bitterly regret going there and are desperate to return home, but can't earn enough.
All they have to do is present themselves to the Thai Embassy! One mammason who spent several years there and had bought property in Thailand with her girls earnings, has recently had the lot taken from her by the Thai authoritys - after two of her girls did exactly that. I believe she has also been locked up.

I wasn't thinkng of the so-called organised 'call-girl' services in the U.K. nor the brothels, both of which also have their inherent dangers for unsuspecting foreigners from abroad who assume that attitudes to working girls in the U.K. is the same is in their own country.
I was thinking more of the incidents in which women, girls and ladies, who have been detained against their will, sexually and physically abused for months or years, manage to escape their hell either by an over-sight by their keepers or an 'accident' or have been so badly treated that someone within the household gets scared enough of the woman's physical condition to dump them outside a hospital for urgent medical treatment.
It is known that many young people do disappear each year from homes within the U.K. and generally in the Western world, especially after bank holiday week-ends or Christmas and New Year after the 'family' has been forced by the occasion to be together.
Most return within a week or two, being put off by the toughness of city life and the question of survival. The whereabouts of a lot of others are eventually traced by certain NGOs. But that leaves a lot of the remaining number left unaccounted for and are never found or traced.
The human trafficking in South-East Asia is monumental compared with U.K. figures in ratio to the population.
The poverty that national big business as well as international companies and conglomerates support and maintain, further exacerbate the growing problem of 'assisted' abduction, kidnapping and unauthorized incarceration.

Yes Joe, there is without a very ugly side to human trafficking which you describe. As I said even some of the girls who know full well what they will be doing when reach their destination, find out they've been led on with promises of great riches only to end up servicing lots of men a day primarily to line the pockets of their sponsor.
These people are scum who make very good money from other peoples misery.
As for the girls that have no idea what they are getting into and are effectively imprisoned slaves, well any normal person should find this sickening. And as you say this is unfortunately very common the world over.
It even happens in Thailand with girls, sometimes very young, being bought over from Burma, Lao etc to work in brothels against their will. Of course this side of p4p is well hidden from the farang orientated side of the industry, where the girls have usually chosen this profession and can make a good living by average Thai standards.

I had the good fortune and privilege once to live with an Ex-Baron girl for a number of years. A delightfully funny, charming and sincere girl who never asked for anything for herself. Extremely accommodating and built with a superb rack, thin waist and the limbs of a leopard. Long black hair and a face to die for.
She had, some time prior to working in Baron's, where I 'met' her, been invited to join a friend to work in Singapore for a few months.
Well, Singapore sounds safe and it is a well-tried place of work for Thais, Vietnamese and other girls from South-East Asia.
This girl found herself locked in a room for 24 hours of the day, seven days a week, compelled to service between 30 and 50 men a day, usually not singly, with absolutely no remuneration.
She was held against her will as a sex slave by those who had got her enticed into that particular city.
The majority of her so-called 'customers' or should I say abusers ( not all asian ) for they paid her captors and gave nothing to her, were mostly not into straight sex but perversions such as torture with implements, cigarettes, lighters and other pain-inducing and blood letting methods.
This girl, years later, on just hearing the word Singapore would go into fits of uncontrollable sobbing, tears, distress and anguish.
I tried of course to rid her of these demons in her head, but miserably failed, needless to say. She was mentally scarred for life.
I have always, in my usual self-deception, thought of myself as a peaceful man. But I know that if I ever met the effluent who are responsible for this sort of atrocity, that my actions towards them would put the acts of the Knights of Bushido and the Nazi SS in the shade.
For anyone to destroy another person so, let alone a young and beautiful girl, has no right to live, in my book.
The darkest side of P4P that we conveniently forget exists.

Re your last comment. Can I be your second on that one mate. I am sure you would not be alone and there would be many more too step up to the plate.
I too have a friend who is in the P4P in BKK and was lured to a middle east country on false pretence by a supposedly good friend in BKK. A lady she had known personally for 10yrs and this lady received 30K B for luring and escorting my friend to this country. By way of a large cash settlement, my friend was in this country for only 2 days and returned to LOS.
Slave traders, human traffickers call it what you like, they are the scum of the earth and should be put down like a mongrel dog.
Nowadays when a friend says she is going abroad for a holiday, with or without a farang or Thai BF, or working, I stick my nose in and enquire as to the bona fides of the situation. Some of the poor buggers seem to have blinkers on, thinking slavery is no longer around, and it is hard to convince them otherwise. I still keep trying.

Joe, barra, count me in, as I'm sure a lot of brothers here feel the same way about this filth.
I have always deeply regretted an incident in London about 18 years ago, when I wandered down into an area called Soho and purchased what I thought and the salesman assumed contained under a plain cover was a 'normal' sex porn videotape.
When I got it back home I discoverd that it was a video of a young Thai girl being mercilessly tortured by some German guys, presumably in Germany. I was revolted and greatly distressed by not only the so-called action which purely involved torture throughout, but my complicit part in contributing to her hell by purchasing the f***ing tape.
I felt guilty for years and even now, do so.
