The head touching thing seems to vary between individuals anyway.
I've seenThais touching each-other on the head in public. I presume some are more religeous than others.

On the bus from BKK to Pattaya, I somehow accidently touched the young ladies head in the seat in front of me. I apologized sincerely. Based on her unforgiving stares back at me during the trip, I was happy she was not carrying a gun, or was she and simply didn't want to waste the bullet. It truly was an accident on my part.
