Has the dismissal of parliament and the suspension of democratic processes ever stopped anything being 'pushed through' ?
Doesn't the little occurence of a military coup have implicit with it the fact that anything that is decreed by the present 'authorities' in these days before normality resumes, is expected to be followed. whether written into the stautue books or not ?
The civil servants are trying to fel their way in this unknown territory, just like everyone else. Hopefully the over-zealous amongst them will have some shorter lead placed on them.
I think we have been very lucky so far that this political transition, hopefully temporary and however regretable,, has meant little disruption to people's lives, and in fact has been somewhat beneficial, dare I say, in some quarters.

It seems that a ban on alcohol advertising is a first step only.
According to the Bangkok Post, a follow-up Bill proposes that the minimum age of alcohol purchasers be raised from 18 to 25 year of age, and that a day be designated when alcohol sales are totally banned. (A day a week? a day a year?.not clear).

I find it very difficult to believe that a civil servant would propose new laws of this kind unless they were instructed to do so by the new regime.

But seriously who cares there’re not banning alcohol so why worry, what’s more worrying is that with just a year in tenure we are seeing these lower priority issues being dealt with, bans on booze advertising, lottery, etc., but no substance on the real issues. Same same but different.

Regarding the whole concept of raising to drinking age to 25 - the example in the US has demonstrated that having a higher drinking age does next to nothing to deter teenagers from getting drunk. Likewise, it wil do very little in LOS - and having the support from an honorable monk will make no difference, as the monk doesn't really understand the dynamics involved.
On the other hand, I am sympathetic to the issue and what they are hoping to achieve. Alcoholism, and gambling, are almost endemic in Asian cultures, which is why the governments are hoping to do something to protect their people. Unfortunately, short of outlawing gambling and alcohol (to a limited degree), there's not much more they can think of.
The ban on alcohol advertising is no different, really, than the ban on tobacco product advertising in the US, including a similar ban on alcohol product advertising (which affects liquors, but not beer). Look around in the US, on billboards and magazines, or on TV - and what do you NOT see?
Thailand, while talking about coming up with their own ideas, is really just trying to copy the US model (isn't everyone?).
It just means that alcohol distributors will need a new model to establish ther brand (give away clothig to be worn by customers, having beer girls work only indoors, sponsor only international events...), and that, realistically, the rest of tourists won't be affected. Heck, personally, I could not care less if the lushes can't fill up....

What I find disconcerting about this is the trend. Few of us in the punting tradition were fans of the Toxsin morality campaign. But a military gov has control over everything, including the ability to shut down P4P for farangs, or to severly restrict it in a way a "democratic" gov could not. I'm all in favor of the coup having ousted the mess that was there. But as I said before, it's easy to shove Humpty Dumpty off the wall, but very difficult to superglue the pieces back together. If there are high-handed moralists in the new regime, they will be able to do things that the previous gov was not able to do...

You said that the partying was about to begin with the new regime, and criticized the old government for their restrictions. You didn't say that things would remain the same with the new regime.
