I think they have real problems
...and they are not MY problems...

I have one simple policy when people ask for 'help', I will help them either by turning them towards the right resource, or offering to take them to the right places (like, their embassy, consulate, the police, etc...).

The odd thing is, I *NEVER* had to do so - it always came down to "Oh, that's alright mate, if you can just spot me 500 Baht for taxi / drink / passport / doctor / medicine I'll be alright." Even if I offered to take them to the hospital, and pay for their exam and their medicine, or buy them a full meal...

Yeah, that's usually a good scam indicator - of course, my Brit friend fell for almost every single one of them "because you have to 'ave to 'elp a mate in need".

So by popular opinion, I was scammed.I'll never know for sure but either way I still dont regret giving the 200 baht.

Lets say I took a BG back to my room, she druged me, robbed all my money including safe contents, what do I do? My passport & phone are gone, I have no money and my memory holds all but a few personal phone numbers.
I go out begging, no luck, everyone thinks im a scammer, I go to the police station, they take a report, will they give me food and shelter? access to a phone? what if I dont have a contact to send me cash? what happens if I cant reach any of my contacts?
What will happen if I arrive at my embassy or consulate without a passport? or with a passport? Are the police and consoluate officals obliged to help me?

I dont think is beyond the realms of possibility, for sure some guys without thinking leave the hotel with all cash and cards in their pocket.

Two answers:
a) don't let things like this happen, be walking-street-smart
("How the hell could she open your safe, you bloody piss drunk bastard?!?!?")

b) if the shit hit the fan already begging is not an option cause it will not help. And yes, the more you are not a well-known scumbag your embassy is obliged and ready to help you, not so much with money though...

My radar is good enough for some 95% correct "character recognition" to tell the scumbags from some unfortunate fellows. I would hardly ever give money but would be ready to help otherwise... take them somewhere, Police and even hospital etc. is a good start to get rid of the scumbags...

Errr... Bella, are you writing a novel and ran out of inspiration?

Your consulate is certainly able to ascertain your identity, and as long as you look presentable enough (i.e. you're not some drunk, singlet wearing Brit) they should assist you in getting in contact with your family, getting you a duplicate password, and helping you arrange for some fund transfers from your family.

So, unless you're the kind of loser that recently offed himself, whose family wouldn't even contact him, you should be doing fine - all without resorting to begging.

Now, in all fairness, most common tourists are probably not capable of the mental prowess to figure this out, or are simply too much in a state of emotional upheaval - but either way, as MTK points out, in all of these cases, begging is NOT the solution.

Last week in Pattaya, walking back to my hotel at about 4am I happened across a farlang guy in his twenties..... he had a razor blade slit about 3 inches long on his face,..... I pulled 100 baht from my pocket, he asked can I spare anymore, so I gave him another 100.
As I walked away I was in two minds to weather he was scaming me or not,....
If it was me, I'd have done the same - a couple of hundred baht and you walk away - no doubt it was a scam or what we called "aggressive begging" in the old days - he is younger and has proximity because you stopped to talk to him - if it gets ugly you will lose a lot more than what you gave him - keep it friendly and pretend you believe him - better he comes at you this way, with verbal BS than with a blood filled syringe or a knife. 200 baht? Mai bpen lai. Enjoy.

It's the principle, not the couple of hundred Baht - no positive karma comes from freely giving money to thieves and criminals.

The sole reason that there is so much cheating, begging and bickering for money is the success these con artists have being helped by people with this attitude....

Agree 100% - and this attitude is being reinforced and perpetuated with the rationale of "It's just a couple of 100 Baht" or "It's good karma" -- which in the end is no different than the folks forwarding chain emails with the reasoning "Hey, it can't hurt"
