Re Spanish/Hispanic.
During the Falklands affair, I was surprised to learn that the local slang for Brits was 'gringos'. From countless westerns, I'd just assumed this was the term for Americans only.
Anyway, same word. Presumably this goes way back to the early colonial period?
Anyway, if Argentines can call Brits gringos, I don't see why Americans can't call Mexicans Spanish.
