Yeah, it is interesting and very foreign to the Hollywood version of romance we grow up on over here. As a coda to this, I asked my TGF:

BigD, I understand now. I still like the idea of at least giving it a shot though. There seemed to be plenty of English speaking girls at the malls, department stores, gold shops, etc. My friend even took two such "good girls" to a disco where they met up with two more girls. By the end of the trip he had more than one offer for freebie fun. It really doesn't seem too hard to pull off. He's no pickup expert, and he's not terribly handsome. He just goes where the flow takes him. (Oh, and he's a real big tipper)

One thing puzzles me, BigDUSA: how did the BF get your email address?
Apart from that, the notion that ANY Thai, let alone a BG, sees value or honor in telling 'the truth', is ridiculous. İNot that they are all dishonorable; indeed, many Thais are honest in their actions, and trustworthy. İBut telling the truth has NOTHING to do with it.
The idea that YOU are being honorable, or 'doing the right thing' by stubbornly blurting out what you think you know to be the truth is naive at best, and more likely arrogant self-indulgence.
You have Western values, and you fail to see that they DO NOT apply in Thailand. İThais value preserving face above almost ALL else, and simply have no negative association with lying. İFar above consideration for you, particularly after a 2-week 'lifetime', is making a living, and for many, gaining status.
To think that you could go from customer to 'lover', without making a significant committment of time, and especially money, is delusional. İUnable to speak her language, knowing NOTHING about her real life, and next to nothing about her culture, are not strong recommendations for you as even a friend.
You are a pleasant customer.
She would rather push YOUR buttons, and make you feel good, than take her chances with pot luck in the bar. İNot that it is calculated: I am one who thinks that the 'textbook for the newbie', 'Private Dancer', is crap. İShe may genuinely like you, BUT given the choice between making a pile of money with someone she can barely stand, and a little with you, she will go for the cash EVERY time. İYou will ALWAYS be low on her priority list.
The ONE strong truth in 'Private Dancer' is that if you f_ck with someone's rice bowl, you WILL get hurt. İBy indulging your Western notions of 'honesty', you have broken the other girl's rice bowl. İYou are not safe, and you have basically f_cked yourself, especially in a little place like Pattaya. İRemember this, because SHE will.
Getting involved in these little Thai shennanigans is a recipe for disaster. İMy advice: stay out of it, and keep your mouth shut, no matter HOW tempted or compelled you are to speak 'the truth'.
And whoever said that it's nice to come home to a warm body, and not have to pay for it: İyou don't have a CLUE. İYou pay now, or you pay BIG later. İNo exceptions.
If you put in the time and effort, learn a LOT about Thailand, and Thais, and make the committment and investment in a REAL Thai girl, i.e., a non-BG, you STILL will pay. İIt's just that you will be happy to do it.
I know this sounds like I think I know it all; far from it. İI just know enough to keep my nose out of things that don't concern me, and keep my eyes and ears open enough to keep learning. İHope you start doing the same.
