Until two weeks ago, I was engaged to one of those proverbial "good girls"; highly educated, professionally successful; conservative parents. ÝMet her at work - I managed her on a major project, and frankly, despite around USD250,000 in education and five years seniority on my side, she made me look bad. ÝThis was a five-year relationship, and the break up hurts like knives.
Money was NEVER an issue, probably because she is more than capable of taking care of herself financially. ÝPulling down over USD100k right now as a consultant, barking orders at Thai CEOs.
The issues were:
1. ÝGeography. Ýin my opinion, Thais are not very "portable". ÝI'm in China, searching endless economic opportunity; she's in BKK, she has no interest in moving here. ÝUS the same. ÝHer Master's degrees are from US universities, but she hates living in the US. ÝShe loves Thailand, and really only Thailand.
2. ÝExpectations. ÝWhat she didn't want in material goods, she wanted ten times over in terms of attention. ÝShe redefined high maintenance. ÝNot presents, but she wanted me to tell her all the time how beautiful she was, how much I loved her, to hug her all the time; when not in Thailand she wanted me to call her every day; when in Thailand, well, I've never been on a shorter leash. ÝAs a result over time she was my only friend in Thailand. ÝThis was really crippling my life, not just for sanuking (which with a very few exceptions I did give up), but for anything.
3. ÝControl. ÝShe's professionally successful, and wants to stay that way. ÝI am also professionally successful(well, until a couple of years ago), but we could not compromise on finding a place to live for both of us to have our careers. ÝAfter a while it was also clear that I really enjoyed no control over the issue - she wanted it all, pretty much demanding me to move to Thailand a couple of times and live in the house her parents wanted to build us. ÝThanks for the offer, but I have no intention of being a house-husband and a potted plant. Ý
4. ÝImmaturity. ÝFrankly most Asians, in a relationship, are ridiculously immature in my opinion. ÝCase in point: Ýat a company dinner, in front of the head of her office, she put a swizzle stick in my ear, thinking that was cute and funny. ÝFrankly I did not. ÝThe silly shit, like asking me to snort my nose to sound like a pig, to pucker up my lips and look like a woman, got on my nerves after a while. ÝAlso the endless conversations about her goddamn nephew and how cute he is. ÝI like to be able to talk politics, but who did she vote for in the last election? Ý"The cutest candidate, I forget his name".
So it wasn't about money - everything in the relationship was about control, attention, and differing expectations. ÝDrove me nuts after a while - I mean seriously I felt like I was going crazy. ÝNot entirely her fault obviously - my fault too, but it just was not working at all.
For everyone who gets a hard-on staring at those superslender, sexy Chinese Thai hi-so gals, please be warned - these are NOT bargirls. ÝSex with a bargirl is a commercial transaction - you shop, you buy, you sanuk, you move on. ÝThere is no give and take emotionally or mentally - just money for sex. ÝA sexual relationship with a GTG (which until recently was very rare outside of wedlock) can be a very very demanding experience, far more demanding than with a Western woman. ÝThe emotional and mental demands are really incredible. ÝIf I only knew then what I knew now - I'm not kidding.

Sincerely sorry to hear about your break-up.

Apart from 1 your problems seem manageable. I mean if these are the only problems you have in your relationship you are lucky !
For 2. Believe me it will be better once you are married. She will feel less insecure and give your more free time. And if you have kids, even better. Calling 5 times a day and spending all the time together is what Thais consider true love between boyfriends/girlfriends. But husband and wife relations are more relaxed and less suffocating.
3 is linked to 1. If you give up trying to find a job or biz opportunities in Thailand, true it is a dead-end.
4. is a two faces coin, yes it is very annoying sometimes but it is also what makes them charming most of the time. Would you prefer a cold and intellectual girl : that is boring 99% of the time !
Just my thoughts after having faced the same problems.
If it is not perfect, I doubt I could have a better "mix" with another woman.
