Quote: from LocalYokul on 10:27 pm on June 30, 2004 i expected someone to take issue with that... but you're right, Poverty is not their idea or their selection or option, it's a way of life and how to survive.
Not really. It's a socio-economic condition and surviving it becomes a way of life, which makes the way out of it even more difficult if not impossible.

It's a socio-economic condition that's often self created. Blaming Thaksin for making loans available to people who aren't responsible enough is like blaming American Express for an unusually high bill this month. No one if forcing them to buy Nokias, Hondas, and house add-ons on credit.

I don't get it? First you have no money. Then you buy a Nokia, a Honda, and house addition. But you do it on credit. Now, you still have no money like before, but you now have a Nokia, a Honda, and house addition. But Packripper wants to give you a hard time? Creative financing confuses some people.

Quote: from LivinLOS on 10:12 pm on June 30, 2004 From what I saw there it left a very sour taste in my mouth with the perception that daughters could be sent away to make the 'easy' money and the fathers and sons stayed around drunk non stop under the pretense of no work available for me.
Couldn't agree more - I often fail to understand how the same society that places women in a 'second rank' category, also expects them to carry the whole burden of supporting their parents (including the unemployed brothers, their gambling, etc...). From the little experience I have had there, I do concur that the work is there and available, but that comfortn and what I might describe as lazyness, keep most of the males camped out in a non-working state. Based on my experience, with very few exceptions, 'poverty' is a socio-economic status that is almost entirely self-inflicted. Ways and means to make money are available to nearly everyone in this world. Harry

You got the goods, but you also got to pay Packripper 5% a month on 250,000 while making 6,000 Baht a month. It had better be pretty creative, whatever they come up with.

The basic facts are, these people ( 90% minimum) are not educated beyond the age of 14. In USA/UK/Europ/Oz we have the advantage of at least a high school education. Would you lend a 14 year old 10 grand with an apr of 18% over 5 years, and expect them to understand this concept? I'm talking about the families here, I am a mebber of one, ( albeit a very minor member) I think I have an idea of their understanding of these handouts.

By the way Harry, the level used by China to declare a person free of poverty is to apply a financial principle based on $1.00u.s. per day. If you earn more than that you are gloriously free of poverty. Nice eh? The fact is that the current financial status of those who we consider rich would be lowered dramatically if those currently in poverty were to rise up and reach the earning power some of us have. Harry? Is this one of your 'kill em all' but slowly theories?

The "uneducated" people in question more often than not seek the lenders out, not the other way around. I don't even advertise and yet people try to take out loans from me all the time. They certainly do understand basic interest. They understand that it's not easy to earn money. I'm fairly sure they know that it doesn't grow on trees. They just don't invest in things that will bring them a return.

Have you lived with a family in Thailand for over 12 months? Are you married to a Thai in rural Isaan? If not, how can you quote such a source?

Yes, my family has been in Thailand since the 1930's. We've employed and lived with/dealt with the Issan for at least 70 years. How about yours?
