Jacob. Forget the gold, it will be cashed in before your plane leaves the tarmac and only make you sad when you return here to see it gone and your TG will have to make some lame excuse.
Forget the fancy eateries. Most of them will probably eat the Thai food off of the menu and many will fell uncomfortable in these surroundings.
As a lover of skinny TG's I never buy chocolates, just look what its has done to American & Aussie women. Enough said.
If you have a a long-term GF here clothes shopping is appreciated.
I like giving perfume for the following reasons:
1. You can buy this at the duty free shops or on the plane, hence last minute shopping.
2. If you have a wife or GF back where you are, you do not have to worry about hiding the gift.
3. If you do have a wife or GF you can buy her a bottle as well, kill two birds with one stone and not have to worry about her smelling another perfume on you.
4. You could get something you like to smell, so you can enjoy the gift as well.
5. It will not be sold as not much resale value.
6. If your old GF is unavailable. You can give it to your new one that becomes available.
Now there is some Thai superstition that it is bad luck to give perfume. So to counter this superstition request some payment for this give usually of the value of 5 baht to ward of evil spirts. This will show you have some limited knowledge of their culture.

i agree that the gold will get hocked, but just be prepared for that.
they do love the gesture/gift, for two reasons,
status that they can flash on their arm/finger/neck
She'll show it to ALL her BG buddies.
an asset with value that they can turn into money
When it comes time to pay rent or send a kid to school

I had never heard that about perfume. gifts of a good perfume were always gleefully received. Soon she and all her friends would be wearing it. mmmmmmm cold beer, good music, soft skin, and a nice gentle perfume...makings of a wonderful evening.

This is very roughly...
You buy 1 baht (Weight in gold) at Thai baht 7850 + a little for craftmanship (not always), like 100-300 thai Baht. The same amount you sell for 7500 thai Baht.
(Again, am not sure excact at the moment, just a rough estimate)

i wouldn't dream of perfume as I found the Girls took it to mean you thought they smell like us.
i always took cuddly toys and they went down a storm.
have eaten some kind of bug (don't know what) and I found them rather boring,very tasteless.

Sorry Nokna, but to me a girl who goes gaga over stuffed toys and starts squeaking like a five year old is not exactly my idea of a turn on.
Giving a woman a stuffed toy and watching her relive her childhood, squishing the f_cking thing to her face, sucks.
But worse is when she points to the stuff toy, strokes the acrylic fur and then points to me and says. "Farang, same same!"
I want to be the only stuffed toy in the room.
I hate competition!

I would side with the perfume. Don't bother with gold, jewelery, it will get cashed in immediately and I don't think you need to spend that much to get the desired effect... happy face and a good roll in the hay! I have had the 'custom' of receiving two baht for the perfume and was told thai ladies do this if they are not married to the man. I never heard it was considered that the lady stunk.
As for stuffed toys, I guess I figured I looked pretty F***ing stoopit walking into a go go bar with Winnie the Pooh tucked under my arm... that is more stoopit than normal!
