The German word filigran comes from filigrana (Italian and Spanish word), which in turn comes from Latin filum + granum. The French version is filigrane. I am sure there must be an English equivalent. Filigrana or filigran or filigrane originally refers to ornamental work mostly of fine wire of gold, silver, or copper applied to gold and silver surfaces. More generally it means ornamental work of delicate and/or intricate design.
