Sometimes I think it really means, "I don't give a shit." I've got an other one. Sometimes I think it really means, "I don't have a f***ing clue." I like to throw it back in to their faces the "Up to you". And since I have done Pattaya as a tourist there is not much "Up to me" to do there. But even simple things to us are not to be taken for granted. I take my breakfast several times in Big C. So I go with BG and say "Up to you". I let her choose between delifrance and M&K. She can only say "Up to you". So I drag her ass in the delifrance. And for the first time in her life she eats french pastery and shit. She likes it. Next day I take her to M&K and we eat noodles and shit. And she learns I don't like my food spicy. So the third time she does not stare with blank eyes to me when I say "Up to you". And she drags my ass to delifrance. So don't forget that she has to learn some stupid thing you already know and above all...... she has to learn who YOU are. Now as to Kermits problem...... this could be a bit more difficult, since he knows her and she knows him. Could there be trouble in paradise?

Personally I think the 'up to you' thing is perhaps the most irritating thing about Thai culture (and actually the most irritating thing about women). You see I think we view 'up to you' as meaning 'I dont care, do whatever makes you feel happy and its fine by me'. That would be fine if the conversation went like this. What do you want to do tonight? Up to you What about going to see a movie? What movie? Hitchhikers guide to Galaxy? Ok In fact the conversation goes like this What do you want to do tonight? Anything. Up to you. How about a movie? What movie? Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? Na. I dont want to see that. Mr and Mrs Smith? Seen it already. Well what another movie? Hmmm. I dont really want to see a movie Well how about we go bowling? No I dont like bowling How about a restaurant? Which restaurant? How about Indian? No I dont like Indian? Thai? I eat that every day? French? No I dont like French What type of food then? Up to you At which point Abrak starts banging his head against the wall. Eventually you choose a restaurant. You get there and you say... Where do you want to sit? Anywhere Ok. How about just here. Hmmmm... ok. Pause Can we move to a different table? Why? Well this table is too close to the toilets. Errmmmm ok. Sometimes I wonder if it is all worth it for a shag.

The "up to you" conversation just posted is one that we are all familiar with but it is not unique to Thailand. "We learn to use language as we grow up, and growing up in different parts of the country, having different ethnic, religious, or class backgrounds, even just being male or female - all result in different ways of talking. These subtle differences in style result in individually minor but cumulatively overwhelming misunderstandings & disappointments. When conversations go 'west" we look for causes and often find them by blaming others. Bad feelings (frustration, irritation, anger) are often the result of misunderstandings that arise from differences in conversational style" The above is a quote from a book I am reading called "That's not what I meant". I find the "up to you" response occasionally frustrating. I can understand if the person has only met me for the first time but if they have known you for a while you would hope that they have learned a little about how you frame your conversations. The same goes for us when talking to Thais. How many of us can recognise and understand the meaning of the different 'smiles' used by Thais in day-to-day communication?

Thai's (and other nationalities) smile for a few reasons, being content/happy is just one of them. Cheers

Perhaps it is simply easier to say "up to you" than to explain what they want (or not) in English. They will tell you what likes or dislikes, if you could converse with them in Thai.

its a buddhist taught ""let go"' It has as many meanings to them as f*** does as an Adjective, noun, and pro noun to us. It goes from "'up to you"......darling To ""up to you"".....dying in a field in remote thailand, with cold glassy eys staring down at you.: :

I simply dont agree. The fact is the grenjai in TGs means that they expect you to say... order the food... because you are paying the bill. The key to Thai culture is that you are supposed to know what a girl wants. As they say.... 'Love is never having to ask'
