Patong (and the Pattaya bar scene for that matter) are holiday playgrounds and should be viewed as such and not as benchmarks for Thai social standards. IMO both places seem to attract more than their fair share of misfits - Thai and farang - to be any use as a guide on acceptable behaviour.
Just because a BG is willing to publicly kiss a farang in Patong it does not make it acceptable in the rest of Thailand...and many other countries for that matter. You certainly won't see the BG kissing in public when she's back in the village.

agree with Pinga
kissing in public is not that widely accepted in the thai culture. even with my thai friend i do not kiss her affectionately in public. i'll do that in privacy.
when you're there...respect others' culture, and if they don't like it don't force...let it be but it all depends on individuals.

You guys are right, kissing in public is not as yet widely accepted in POLITE THAI SOCIETY. However what seems to be perfectly acceptable in POLITE THAI SOCIETY is publicly showing prejudice and contempt for their own people, simply because some of them ( Excuse me, a vast majority of them ) were born with darker skin and come from the northeast part of the country. Gotta love that POLITE THAI SOCIETY. Never mind that the people in Issarn are just as much Thai as the POLITE THAI SOCIETY, and never mind that not everyone in Issarn is a bar girl, that most of the people of Issarn are the rice farmers who's hard work day after day provides the POLITE THAI SOCIETY with a very necessary part of their daily lives. Oh no, none of that matters to POLITE THAI SOCIETY. You guys are absolutely right. Whenever I'm in LOS and I'm with a Thai lady ( Whether she works in a bar or not ) I will observe and respect Thai customs and culture, so no hand holding or kissing in public. Instead I guess I'll just have to force myself to put up with the Thai custom and culture which allows me to go with the lady to her home village, meet her family and not only be welcomed into her parents home, as well as their hearts, but also be allowed to sleep with their daughter in the same bed, under their own roof, even though we aren't even married. Oh well, I guess that's the sacrifice I'll just have to make in order to please the POLITE THAI SOCIETY. Peace

of course i agree the point there are fewer Thai's of virtue in Patong.
how big is the place compared to Bangkok?.
of course i know Patong or Pattaya or parts of Bangkok are not representive of everyday Thai people.
i must have imagined all those kisses i got when up country,in front of the family and friends.
i love Thailand and learnt a lot about culture and customs and would never do anything knowingly to offend the Thai religion or culture.
but back to the original question,kissing.
what is a kiss?.
i know many non BG's in Patong and have often had drinks or dinner with them.
when we part,they often give me a little kiss goodbye,and all this in public.
always got a little kiss goodbye from the 3 reception staff at my hotel,whenever i left.
are we saying a little peck on the cheek or lips from any girl(Bg or not) is offensive to Thai culture?,or just the tongue down the throat type?.
and what if the girl initiate's the kiss in the middle of the street?,do i push her away?,for fear of offending people?.

IMHO:
I think Thai culture, like many Asian cultures, frowns on public display of affection (PDA). As these societies interact with westerners and western cultures, PDA becomes more acceptable, especially in areas frequented by westerners and by the younger generations who are more acceptable to these changes. However, the society as a whole still frowns on such displays, especially the older and/or more traditional segments.

According to my experience KISSING of any type is NOT POLITE in Thai culture. Even mentioning the fact that kissing at the airport or bus terminals, between farangs and "working TGs" is very common, we cannot consider this to be acceptable by Thai people. The girl will undoubtely be seen as a BAR GIRL, which summarizes almost the worst a girl can be for the locals.
You have kissed the girls in public, even at their own villages so, I think those girls were seen as bar girls by the locals, despite you were a close friend/customer or not. Have you seen (in public) any Thai couple exchanging more affection rather than holding hands? Well, think about that.
Sometimes we can put a TG in trouble if we don't know the meaning behind certain issues. I am trying to imagine how was the rest of the day of the receptionist at that hotel after you gave her a friendly kiss on the cheek....just a thought, just a thought....
