I would not call these items rules, but boundaries. When you enter the bars you are usually half drunk facing some beautiful women so it is easy to let you guard down and get swept away.
It is akin to going to Las Vegas. Many go there with a plan and once they enter the casino all bets are off.
For the most part it is a big game and any game has rules. They have their own unspoken rules as well such as one when you bf one girl from a bar everytime you enter this bar you are stuck with her. Yes you can break this rule, but this will cause a lot of hardship. Who needs hardship with they are seeking sanuk. I just modify this rule to my own accord and bf the best looking girl in the bar. If there are none, move to the next bar. Yes, I do get some starfish sometime, but at least I am never embarassed the next morning.
Many try finding love here, but the odds are against you. You may as well as buy a Thai lottery ticket. The two situtations I seen work is one when the BG is ready for retirement (early 30's) or two if she is fresh out of the country.
BG's can be rather ruthless and are the first to pounce on the newbie BG right off of the farm. I seen many of scams pulled on virgin BG's by the verterns. So if you can get a girl before she is hardened by the experience you have a chance.
Otherwise just forget about love and pursue happiness as there is a lot of fun to be had

I'm not sure it's so much about finding love and happiness as these things finding you.
Which they certainly won't if you goose-step around in a power-trippy, highly defensive, 'nobody rips ME off' frame of mind.
The finer points of LOS bar etiquette aside, I think the same basic rules apply as anywhere. Use your judgment, learn from your mistakes and don't generalise from the particular.
Oh - and try to like other people. Ý

I'm quite sure the more flexible contingent (Oaktoad, BallsB, HamSup, Arcadius etc) will have infinitely more fun and success in the long run, not to mention gain a lot more respect along the way, than TinMan with his rigid set of rules will.

Having a set of rules can be a good idea - I have a couple of strict rules that I always try & stick to every day whenever I'm in Bangkok/Pattaya, in my quest for a good time:
1) Have a beer
2) Have another beer.
It works for me.

Thanks for all the replies. I have only 3 comments:
1. I noted in the beginning of the post that this applied only to BG's/mamasans etc. It was not intended to apply to Thailand generally.
2. The "dogs" example is an analogy which illustrates the point. You should not take analogies as gospel. They are a simply means of re-inforcing a point. Gulliver didnt REALLY go to Lilliput.
3. As to rules - call it what you wish, guidelines, an attitude, whatever. I liked the "boundries" comment. If it makes someone new to the bar scence think- good. If it stops one of the many who leave with broken hearts or empty pockets - great. If people can do their own thing and wind up having fun - perfect.
LOS is an easy place for the inexperienced to be taken for a ride.
Just my personal food for thought...

In my opinion, a bargirl is 'hardened' or begins to escape into fantasyland on her first day/night of work. There's no innocence left after you start selling yourself. The drugs, gambling, etc. just make the fantasyland more bearable.

"the trap" : basically, BG or MP girl becomes pregnant and you are either bonded to this girl for life or you choose to be a person who has abandoned his own child. There are lesser versions of the trap, where you just fall in love and end up emotionally distraught or scarred.
I think everyone has to fall into the trap at least once. Some people get out (through choice or luck), some don't. I'm pretty much a local (albeit imported one), and I almost fell into the trap too. I only got out because the girl in question didn't play her cards very well (she was too busy having fun in our relationship, drugs, sex, and rock and roll.... well, techno actually, instead of sinking her claws in like a smart BG/MP girl does). You don't realize how lucky you are until much much later, when you are in a real relationship with someone who is your equal.
