Marco, unlike most of the TGs you may have the luxuary of being able to make such a decission, based on you belief in the importance of self-esteem, they dont.
Once again, it is more important that a TG have the money to provide for their child, rather thinking of her self-esteem, being poor and watching the child suffer physically.
This is a reality in Thailand and some TGs actualy struggle to afford the diet powdered milks that the young infants so often need. ÝNot all TGs have close families who will support them, its normally the other way round.
A poor TG with a child who possibly falls ill, tell me what are her choices and what does she do. "Say a f_cken prayer and it all gets better" Ý

Though Thailand is a poor country, it is nothing compared to Myanmar, Laos or Cambodia (to take the neighbors).
I have not been everywhere but have experienced many times that if a Thai really needs food, people will help him. I don't say life is easy and you can find free powdered milk at every corner but peoples struggling for food is not common (anymore).
Most of my Thai friends tell me that if you really want, you can find a small job almost everywhere : 2,000-3,000 bhts/mth and 10-12 hours work. But this is enough to feed a small family.
Comfortably sitting in my nice condo I don't judge these girls, but I don't buy the "they have to do it to survive" story.
What about the ugly ones who cannot work in bars or brothels and those who don't want ? They just leave their children die? No, they suffer but survive without the prostitution.
My point is that Thailand is far from being the poorest country in Asia but it is the country with the biggest number of prostitutes per inhabitant (not an official study but I guess a correct assumption !).
So you cannot link so easily poverty and prostitution. There are other factors, one of them being the general mai pen arai attitude.
I will not complain and am rather happy of this situation!
I enjoy these girls and I respect them but I don't pity them.

Well, to me that's the only reasonable attitude to take. Doubtless there are a great many girls in the Thai sex industry who DO deserve to be pitied, but on the whole I think most - not all - of those working the farang market have made a lifestyle choice of their own volition, and they have plenty of upsides to compensate for the downsides.
OK, 'crossing the hurdle' must be very difficult for them, but after they've got used to it, I don't think they fare too badly. At any event, whether it's worth it or not is something they can judge for themselves. They're not a bunch of helpless 4 year-olds, and heaping unwanted pity on them is just patronising. No doubt it's better than treating them like worthless little whores, but it's just another way of refusing to take them seriously as people.
At the end of the day, most BGs are poorly educated girls with a temporary lease on good looks, trying to make the best of the particular hand they've been dealt. In that last respect, it seems to me that they're very much like the rest of us.

It is individual people that are really poor and not so much countries as a whole. Some countries also contribute to the individuals poorness by missusing their GDP income.
Provery and prostitution are in fact directly linked and have been for a long time, just like poverty and crime.
Also the drive/ambition that most people have, is to earn as much as they can, while they can. This is a pretty common one in all walks of life, so the TGs bend a few moral values to do so. It happens everywhere, just look at the Enron executives and all the other white collar theives. Same objective, slightly different set of rules.
Whats the difference!!!The attidute is to take/get what you can while you can!!
Let face it, why be poor if you can compromise some morals and be better off financially. Remember, also, that if these girls do not earn what money they can, while they can, (ie when young & beautiful) then what chance have, to have any form of sustainable life when the are single, over 35, no good looks left and have a child to raise.
For TGs its also the chance of exposure to meet a ferang, who they know can change their lifestyle and care for their family in one instant. This can be quite a high drawcard for them going into the business.
Think in these terms,"Show me a rich female slut who is looking for a giggilo and many men wouldl glady offer their services"
Also which (Thai man or Ferang) will want to look after a TG when her use by date has expired. I suggest no one!!!
With all due respect, I think you take the high moral ground too easily and also for granted.

The problem with this is that there's such a variety of motives and pressures leading BGs into the profession. Generalisations may be wide of the mark in any particular case, and you can seldom rely on the veracity of whatever story your BG is telling you. They all know there's mileage in sob stories, especially if you come over as jai dee.
Those of us who haven't been in LOS for a very long time can't hope to properly understand a BG's motives, the social Ý& economic pressures on her, the pychological price she's paying. These things will in any case vary greatly between individuals. I would hope most of us at least have the nous to realise that applying Western standards is futile.
I don't see any call whatever to make moral judgments on BGs - this is especially rich coming from people who make full use of their services. We have our reasons, they have theirs. Unless a particular girl is really special to you, it seems to me that all you need reasonably do is treat her nicely, be appreciative of what she does for you, pay her properly, show her some consideration and respect. I don't think they have any right to expect more than this, and am pretty sure most of them don't want any more than this. One thing they do want, as a rule, is to please you in fair exchange for your money. So just BE pleased, and don't get all judgmental or soupy on them. Ý

As a Thai who happens to employ other Thais, IMO there are many who simply don't have the work ethic. The work is out there. I offer it myself to my own workers (overtime, odd jobs, etc) and tend to only get halfway responses. Many would rather opt for less work (but still want to enjoy the fruits).
Not a generalization, but yes I do encounter the lack of work ethic a lot. (not to mention the case that I mentioned where I supported the Piano girl and set up a shop for her at Seacon... which of course didn't work)

spot on again! same worked for me! the attitude is still not there! set up a shop for my ex-forte one at ramkhamhaeng also did not work as to lazy getting up at time or doing the maths on accounting.
tried to get her another job these days but still to lazy to get up and show in time. tells me makes her sick to get up before 11:00! still sponsoring her through universoty so far, but have my deepest doubts she will ever finish uni, and even after what sort of job will she be able to take with that kind of attitude!
her end game is to get married asap to somebody who can support her (me), but also who wants to get married to a sweet but lazy tg!

What's so bloody great about the Protestant work ethic anyway? Isn't the reason why so many of us enjoy living in LOS is that we get away from all that crap?
Thais ARE remarkably lazy. But also remarkably charming. They recognise that life is for living - and personally, I think it's a good trade. Ý

do not get me wrong i am not into potestant work ethics anymore, i hardly do get up before 12:00 anyway.
the big difference is that i do have a business that supports me! she hasn't! her only business is to pamper me which is surely not a life perspective!
especially as i am not planning to marry her and she knows it! so what is her future about then!
