Having read this thread back to the beginning, I was reminded of the dire warnings of meeting girls from internet dating sites, but proceeded regardless not to heed them. I think that I am a pretty good judge of character and would know whether I was being scammed, or whether they were just gold diggers.
Now I can bring the story up to date.
There were two girls that I was writing to from ThaiLoveLinks, a good internet dating site with some lovely girls on it. One was 26, the other 31. I'm 55. I corresponded with them both virtually on a daily basis for 6 months. The younger one was beautiful, the older one slightly less so, more cute than pretty. After 6 months, I would have said that I would choose the younger one with my heart, the older one with my head. I was becoming seriously worried that perhaps I might like both of them. A meeting was arranged with each one on Phuket on consecutive weeks.
Just before Christmas, the younger one texted me to say that she had met another guy, loved him and wanted to be with him. They wanted to get married. I was rather upset, because she had always told me that she was only writing to me, so she had lied. I had always been honest to both girls and the older girl had been honest in telling me that she wrote to two other guys, but liked me best. She had met the other guys, but would not make a commitment until she met me.
Although upset to lose the younger one, I was also a bit relieved that I was down to one, so less hassle.
So the two of us met on 30th December and went to Phuket the day after, for 9 days, until she had to go back to work in Bangkok at the Estate Agency. We met again for the last three days of my holiday.
But I'm sorry to disappoint all the doom mongers. We had a fantastic time together. She is a real sweetie, probably the most gentle, loving girl I have met so far. In all the time together, she never complained, bitched or moaned about anything. Well, not strictly true, she did a lot of moaning. The lovemaking was incredible, she was willing to do anything, and again, never complained that she had had too much sex.
So to recap. The first girl will probably marry this other English guy. So internet dating produced a success for her and him, but not with me. My girl is great, I couldn't hope for better, so I will almost certainly marry her in June when I'm next over. One of her two guys also found a girl that he loves, but the other guy was very upset that my girl chose me and out of the 7 of us who used the internet dating, he is the only one that hasn't found happiness. But he was writing to other girls too, so probably he will go back to one of the others.
So don't knock the dating scene. Sometimes it does work quite well.

Not quite. First she is going to come over here in May for 3 weeks, if I can get a Visitor's Visa, so that she can see how she likes England. Then I will return to Thailand in June. Then we will marry.
It is important not to underestimate the time spent in contact online, which is continuing now, of course. We are in contact daily, sometimes for a couple of hours on Messenger and we also have phone chats and texts.
I will retire when I'm 60, sell everything here and move there. She's still young enough at 31 to work if she wants, although I could support her without her working if she preferred. I might buy her some small business that would keep us both occupied, perhaps.
So I see no reason why we shouldn't live happily ever after. Is it love from both sides? Yes, I think so. Her Auntie is married to an English guy. I spoke to him on the phone for an hour a few days ago. They are very happy and he will move to Thailand too within a few months having been happily married for 4 years. I told him that Bee had amazed me by not complaining about anything and he told me that her Aunt is exactly the same. He keeps on trying to find some flaw in her nature, but there is nothing. They have the occasional rare spat, caused more by misunderstanding than by anything else, but have not had an argument in all that time. He is amazed at how loving, adorable and gentle she is. So give me some of this too!

Good on you Hugh mate.
I went down the same route last year with the same basic intentions - I was chatting to 3 "normal" womenm a sales manager, a anurse and a lady who had an internet cafe. Ok so none came to much when I met them in Bangkok but I still think it's a good way to go about things - I then met a bargirl in Samui (29) adn things are going well on that front - she is learning English and no longer working in a bar (I have no reason to disbelieve her) - going back to LOS in May to spend 2 weeks with her and will take it from there.

There's far too many cynics on this board - do not assume everyone else has your LOW standards.
