not all thais r like this, in fact very few do it but it is too many.

I confess I am surprised to hear this, because the reports we read about expat Asian workers in Dubai is that Thais are among the best. I cannot claim any firsthand working experience in Thailand, like you, but speaking simply from a tourist's viewpoint, I have been impressed by Thai hotel staff's dedication and application and sincerity -- in all hotels that I have stayed in or visited. They have made me feel the hotel is safe and good and caring. I have not experienced this in other places, not Malaysia, not Singapore, the immediate neighbours. The same applies to their famed healthcare services, I am sure, as many posters in BTF who have had occasion to use medical services in BKK have testified.

Sure. Come to think of it, there was a time when all over Asia labour was indeed cheap, inducing most employers (even native ones) to follow the same strategy.
Personally, I am taking with a handful of salt the data on low IQ made by other posters, though I guess Magnum probably is closer to reality in citing government neglect and the backwardness of rural Thailand. History tells us that Thailand has been among the smarter lot that avoided confrontation and escaped being over-run or annexed by virtue of its skills in diplomacy. A nation of low IQ people, I would think, would long have been overwhelmed by foreign invaders.
Then again, while most businesses may be owned by ethnic Chinese, as you say, it still requires workers to run and make a profit. Now if these businesses have a reputation for quality, and I have seen a lot of good quality made-in-Thailand stuff (silks, crafts, foods, watches, clothing, etc) that redounds to good worker skills. Hell, even the fake goods are so good.
Language, culture, customs, beliefs, traditions do play a great part in people's lives and those factors could make for tricky diagnosis when foreigners apply international norms in their evaluation. I would look a lot lot more before believing any single people could be generically deficient as is made out by some. Iodine deficiency, maybe, but Thailand is not the only country consuming food deficient in iodine.
What works against Thais when it comes to the world's hard gaze is that they probably are the number one people the world's tourists are looking at most times. There is therefore that much more analysing and criticising. We see the place, love the vibes, and then once we retreat to our own miserable lives we wonder what the hell makes the Thais tick !! A nation of 60 million with a floating tourist population of not less than 12 million (the better part of them farangs) gives you a ratio of 1 tourist for 5 natives. Imagine the stress they must face, given their strong traditions and complexities.

... believe me, I take no pleasure in concluding that Thai cultural values are inferior... raised in a number of foreign countries, judging a country in which you are a guest is contrary to my upbringing... but, I have a very personal vested interest in seeing this society succeed... I've put a lot at risk, personally... I think I've earned that right.

Before this gets moved, Magnum, to answer your question, I don't live here, I haven't even stayed long enough at a stretch. I just keep visiting here as a hedonist. I thought I mentioned it. Your observations are interesting. But my point was just against this thing about IQ being low among Thais. I entirely agree with you that Thai culture, customs, traditions, beliefs and attitudes are vastly different and there is a complex interplay of hierarchical politics among the people. What troubles me is this contention that Thais -- or an entire people for that matter -- could be generically dumb as is being made out. It's the other cultural, traditional, linguistic things -- and of course the inadequate education system -- that make for all the apparent slowness of comprehension, and not any inbuilt deficiency in IQ, IMHO.
