Magnum, look, I am not disputing the many scientific studies that have shown iodine deficiency to have a major impact on intellectual development. I know because I have been exposed to so many public campaigns in my own area promoting iodised salt over ordinary salt, for instance. So I have no dispute on this.
Okay too with the findings of low IQ among Thai school students, given the inadequacies of the education system to add to the nutritional deficiency. Of course, I would assume that the IQ studies were themselves conducted intelligently in the first place.
As I pointed out earlier, my discomfort is with the sweeping generalisations being made here to show up Thais in general as a backward lot. Such that every tending poster in this thread uses this scientific pretext to paint an entire population into the boondocks. I therefore disputed one post that said Thais are not capable of thinking which is why, according to the poster, foreign collaborators won't come. That is factually wrong, because in reality Thailand has hundreds of collaborations going. And, even granting another poster's contention that those successful Thai enterprises are largely ethnic Chinese managed, I am saying that it takes good workers for an enterprise to succeed. And I have read and heard reports that Thai workers in the Gulf have a high reputation. Is anyone disputing that ?
Local conditions must certainly be playing a major role in shaping what some have perceived to be poor attitudes of domestic workers in contrast to their fellow-nationals working overseas. Thai schools of today may be in a shambles, I have no direct knowledge but, from what I have seen as a tourist, yes, the school students do fill me with a sense of dread for their intellectual development. That is more due to the countless distractions and the widespread sense of an extraordinarily carefree existence that seems to pervade here. The nutritional deficiency must certainly play a part too in hampering the physical and intellectual development of rural folks and maybe many in the urban regions as well.
I am just saying that all these notwithstanding, Thailand is an economic success ; through history it retained its independence ; a people of generally low IQ -- as is being made out -- could not have accomplished that, could they? The studies only show that IQ levels today are diminishing. Unfair to use that finding to denigrate an entire population. Modern Thailand has shining examples of sectoral successes : hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing. Some may argue that these were all built by foreigners but, I say, Thai workers are operating them. Maintaining standards sufficiently high to attract millions of repeat clients year after year.

Bro Kaymanx : The part about maintaining their independance...are you aware that they gave up something like the whole of Laos in the process...just to avoid fighting in fact, as despite their claims of being brave and tough guys and "never invaded since the Ayuthaya period" the Thai army never showed much value on the battlefield (example: the fighting against the japanese lasted for....20mn before the Thai army surrendered to the Japanese.)
Now I give you that avoiding war at all cost is certainly not a proof of low IQ in itself, but to claim to be brave invincible warriors when you do nothing but run,chicken out and runaway (or go and repeatedly kill scores of harmless paysans to steal back a Buddha statue like in the Ayuthaya period) is also not a proof of a superior intelect.

... and that's just a dream... assuming Thailand is competent to do something about the problem, it will be generations before the changes begin to get traction... meanwhile, the world has long left Thailand behind... it will be reduced to competing with Burma, Cambodia and Laos (all of which, incidentally, have substantially solved this problem and whose IQs are now rising).
... THAT.... is the dilema of Thailand.
