Apologies for typo,, yes AUD$1,400,,,,, and yes you get it ALL back plus interest if you win. Considering that fact it is definately worthwhile getting an Immigration expert to help out,, I am being quoted around AUD$400 for the case.
Really an unnecessary waste of time,, the guy has ZERO interest in staying permanently in Aus,, he just wants to come over,, if he can handle living here he will stay and learn English ( well Australian dialect of English ) and THAT is it,, return to his family and friends in Thailand with the knowledge that his fluency in English will enhance his work prospects and probably double his wages.
From my point of view,,,,, Give a man a fish and you feed him for 1 day,, TEACH a man to catch fish and you feed him for life.

That's my point as previously stated:
The whole situation with the fiancee visa is flawed too. You've been dating this girl that you can see only on holiday. The U.S government won't allow her to visit on a tourist visa. So you get a fiancee visa and have 3 months to decide whether you want to marry her. The whole time shes f***in your brains out. You think this is great! So you get married and she get's her green card. She then realizes that half your assets are hers when divorced. She divorces and becomes quite wealthy by Isarn standards. She makes everybody happy up country, gains much face at your expense.
The good old USA, the government that you've been paying taxes to all your life, has aided some Isarn farmers daughter in shaking you down. I guess this is a form of foreign aid. Lifes a bitch! 5555!

FARRRRKKKK,, in Aus you have nine months to get married.......WOWWWW I thought we had bad / stupid/pathetic / rediculous rules,,,, yours tops them by far,,, maybe time for another civil war ( joke and not really something to joke about).
I no longer feel sorry for Aussies.

Thanks to all for some of the insights. There has been a lot of good dialogue both on point and in areas that are somewhat related.
A few more very specific questions....let us assume that she will get approval for the visa.......
1. What is the wait period for the tourist visa from the day of interview until the visa can be picked up?
2. What is the time limit for use? In other words, within how many days/months must the trip both begin and end?
From some of the comments, it would appear that the US has a bit different approach than many other western countries.

The article that you refer is really focused on fiance visas, I believe they are called K-1 type. The protocol that we are going through is for a tourist visa, and from what I can gather from comments, it is viewed differently by the embassy.

If she is tentatively approved, she will need to get the physical exams/blood work done, return to the embassy with that stuff, and will then get the visa. It appeared to me, as my TGF was waiting to get turned down, that people showing up with the physical exams who had already been tentatively approved, where told to come back in just a few days to pick up the visa.
I believe there is an issue about when the clock starts ticking, either at the point of granting, or sometime later, if requested. I don't recall the answer to that one, but I read it on another forum (maybe thaivisa.com). Perhaps one of the bro's here help...

Just a point from past experience, not past expertise but I have been through the processes a few times with personal friends. The one thing that the tourist visa approval person will be looking for is the girl’s flight itinerary, (they will not tell her this prior to going there) from a local travel agent stating the flight number and date of flights to and from the USA. They will most likely not approve a USA tourist visa without a set date of departure and date of return.
Take the info for what you want. I have been at the interviews a few times myself and the success rate without proof that a flight is booked (you don’t have to actually pay for the flight to get the itinerary) prior to applying has been very, very small. = 1 out of 6
With the itinerary it has been 6 out of 8.
The fiancé visa is different in these aspects; the tourist visa is much harder to receive for some people. The main thing regardless of any other documents is the proof that she will want to return to Thailand. What reason will she have that would keep her from staying in the USA? That is there main summary for visa approval by the state department.
I hope this added bit of information is helpful and not a disappointment, you can easily get the needed documents with very little effort.

Fiance (K1) VISA's are a piece of cake. You just need to follow the proper procedures and forms.
Now vistor's VISA'a are another thing and Ripmaster has stated many good points.
Single woman, less than 40 and not on company business have a slim chance of approval.
