I returned two weeks ago from my first trip to LOS.
Given other commitments, I had planned to spend three days only. I ended up staying eight.
I didn't overindulgence by any means whilst I was there, and maybe because of that, I feel the overwhelming desire to go back. I shall, but not for about 11 months.
For me, I felt comfortable in the city. Over the course of those few days, I learned how to handle the situations Bangkok throws up. I spent three nights with one girl, and while we bonded, I didn't confuse this with commitment. I remain interested in her, but more to know how she gets on in life.
I also met some regular thai women who I would plan to see when I go back - not that that would stop me going to bars (and especially Eden Club which is definitely on the itinerary for the next trip).
Could I live there? I don't know. I can certainly see myself living in Asia, and am actively seeking opportunities to relocate. I would not be put off in one arose in BKK.
OK, I have no real ties in my home country, so this is realistic for me. Maybe I romanticise the kind of life I could live in Asia. The main thing that changes is how you think where you are in life. Is BKK an escape, or is it a place that feels natural. In my short time there I saw enough guys treat the girls with no respect. Maybe seeing too much of this is another thing that changes your attitude to the place.

Is BKK an escape, or is it a place that feels natural?
I'm not sure this is valid either/or. Whether BKK is an escape or not depends on how you feel about where you are now. Either way, you're not exactly cut off from the West here, although you may feel liberated from Western attitudes & mores (at least I certainly do).
As for feeling natural, I think that depends on what you're doing while you're here. If you're working or are otherwise 'involved', I'd say that the city acquires a sense of reality that it might previously have lacked. That still doesn't make it feel 100% 'normal' though, thank God. Ý Ý

What I meant by natural, is do you consider it a place where you fit. For me it was western enough that I didn't feel too detatched, but had enough that was new and appealing for me to want to explore and enjoy.
The escape descripton is more problematic. I could rephrase it in terms of how different are you in BKK than back home - that kind of temporary setting aside of your normal behaviour than often comes with a vacation. It could also be more extreme in the sense of escaping something back home, to come to LOS and be treated by the girls in the way only they can. . . .

Thailand for me is a place to escape some of the harsher realities of the west and the daily grind of work. For a brief time, you can indulge, experiment and relax at a pace that you decide on: "Momentary Escape". I must admit the novelty has worn off a bit. Although I still enjoy my time there, reality tells me to leave and just keep on visiting.
Could I live there for an extended period?, well, I am still deciding after 3 years of numerous visits??????????.
