Here's another data point: my TG has a four year old son from a Thai guy who turned out to be a yaba freak. She was young and down from the country working (like a slave) in a BKK factory, sending money back home, when she met him at her workplace. He pressured her for sex for a year. When she finally got pregnant, they went back up-country, had a village wedding, and he cooled out for a while. Unable to stay off yaba, he amped out again, and abandoned her. So after a year at home, she went back to BKK to support her son, etc. Against her family's wishes, she did the a-go-go thing, because she was determined to prevent her son from growing up in poverty. I heard some of the sadder points (I won't repeat 'em here) of this story while we were spending a few weeks on the islands down south. For someone who's as shy and warm-hearted as she is, it surprises me how tough she really is on the inside. She is only now learning to trust men again, and to realize that not all Thai men are bad. But once burned, twice shy.

I'm sure you realize that there are a million stories like your lady's (and worse) - all of them heartbreaking.
As to her resiliency: I by no means am taking anything away from her when I say; Of course she's tough. Given the cards she's been dealt, what choice does she have? (Especially since she is a devoted mother). I've always been amazed at the strength of Thai women and I salute your lady.
To tie this into another of our fave topics; Sadly sometimes it is necessary to become "hardened" to be tough. Thus perfectly decent people might do something that you find hard to imagine them being capable of. You, remarkable person that you seem to be, have come to terms with that.

I agree with your thoughts. Also the reason why, though I follow Stickman's columns, I find his most recent rants about bar girls way off base. There are no magic wands to break the cycle of poverty, and the stories upcountry too numerous -- but the lucky and resilient ones make it out alive on the other side, with their humanity intact.

- from my wanderings, I find that if you can get [ and they are rare ] a strong willed, or individual TG, then sure, you have a good chance of converting her, keeping her straight, whatever, - the problem often is, that for the most of them, the are followers, if there friends/workmates are on the game, taking yah bah, two timming farangs, etc. etc. - then more than likely they will as well .... as a general rule, if you are really keen about a TG, take a good look at her friends and family, that will give you a fair idea as to your chances! Re the Thai Boyfriend saga, - well, undoubtedly true in many cases, but its heard that often, I am starting to wonder if every second Thai guy is in fact a no hoping drug taker ... I think that sometimes its just a fact that young Mr. Ban Nok has no hope of supporting a wife/family in the manner most farangs can - ... your thoughts Guys ?

Good topic and good posts. Love it. I for one never have nor ever would go for any sort of sponsor deal. Guess I just like the variety and only coming to LOS 2-3 times a year gives me the luxury. Those of us posting on this topic are all pretty informed(most much more than me) and no need to listen to me on the topic.
The audience that I'm targeting with my comments are the newbie types that go to LOS, take a BG and become enchanted by the beautiful way they conduct their trade. They fall in love, she goes with him to the airport, he cries and cries and promises to send money so they can continue their love until he returns...... blah blah blah..... We all know the stories. Just want to make sure those guys are informed of some of the realities.
ABC... liked the clarifications. cool. Would never intentionally go after a bros' lady(bro-meaning a guy I know or friend) and would expect trouble if I did. As for who's in trouble.... that's a guy thing you touched on. We all like to think we have the tools to take out any other guy on the planet and thus we boast. Kind of like dogs pissing on trees. LOL As for who's the meanest dog around......
Anyway, from my experience, seems like I always wind up with a sponsored lady at least once a trip though..... thus the posts. Probably because I NEVER go with a lady that approaches me..... I always go for the hardest catch in the room. Thrill of the hunt.... you know.

My wife is now 48. We met when she was 33. When she was 13 her father had a stroke and she, the eldest child, had to leave school and support the family (along with her mother who sold food in Banglamphu). She worked in warehouses, dug ditches, in rice fields, anything she could get. Pay? As little as 15 baht per day sometimes 40-50 baht.
When she was a little older she worked for her brother in law, a Thai Chinese guy who owned a factory making jewelry boxes. She was running a sheet metal stamping machine without any safety gear -- laying the aluminum sheet in by hand as the machine cycled. One day she missed and lost the top half inch of her longest finger on her right hand. Sheered clean just below the nail. Pay? 15 baht a day. No compensation. I don't like her brother in law a lot. She tends to hide that hand, still ashamed of the injury after decades.
When she was in her mid to late 20s and still a virgin, she met her only Thai boyfriend, eventually he talked her into bed, they had sex three times, she got pregnant and when she told him, his response was "Oh yeah? Who's the father?" She tried to make a go of the marriage but her (informal) husband's family treated her like shit, and finally one day she had enough and brained her mother in law with a skillet. Thinking the old hag was dead she fled the country to Saigon, returning later to discover the bitch was still alive. Oh, well. So much for the marriage.
Her mother and younger sister took care of the baby son in the slums of Bang Sohn, she went back to work. At about this time she had the opportunity to become a mia chow, a rented wife, of a Taiwanese and she took it. That lasted about a year. She turned to prostitution to claw her way out of poverty for the sake of the child and her family. She was by now, almost 30. She worked in Pattaya, in Bangkok, Soi 22, Nana, Cowboy, she went to Kuwait for a year as minor wife of an elderly Kuwaiti. She went to Macao and worked the casino, rolling drunken Chinese gamblers. She tried Hong Kong but the cops chucked her out.
I met her in Nana Plaza in 89 and she was working at Hogs Breath. Because of her cheerful personality (and nice tits) she was a popular dancer, her bar nickname was Pikun and she wore badge #2. She was the second BG I let move in with me and we are still together all these many years later.
Despite all of the trvails, she is a wonderful person, easy going, cheerful, laughs a lot. Back in her BG days she was a heavy chronic ganja smoker but took the cure at Wat Butthabhat in Saraburi. That was before she met me. She had no shortage of guys who wanted to marry her, but except for me no one wanted to get involved with her family, and her child. So she chose me, I am lucky.
But so is she. To use some circumlocution, her family's social status is not so great. (Although they are salt of the earth, central Thai -- she was only girl in the bar who couldn't speak Lao -- and I have never been deluged with requests for money from them. Her father died some years ago now, and her mother stays with us as does our son, who is now 20.
Through me, as my social and professional ties here have expanded and developed, many people at a strata she would never have been allowed to mingle with other than as a servant. Without trying to brag, my friends and business associates are generals of military and police, senators, politicians, government ministers and deputy ministers, bankers, Supreme Court judges, lawyers and academics, etc. The astonishing thing is that she is accepted, and not treated as an inferior. She has become a renowned cook and caters many dinner parties for my friends, where her simple but rich country cuisine from Ayuddhya, Lopburi, Angthong, etc is much admired. (I was admitted to those circles as an arms dealer and later a defense journalist - bureau chief in fact, and this opened a lot of doors for me that normally would have remained closed.)
She has come a long way from digging ditches, but she hasn't let anything affect her.
She is so strong, and so indispensible to me, I can't imagine being without her.
Gentlemen, we all know that the long sad stories from the BGs are often fabrications, but, not always.
