Many people seem to think it's 19, but they are confused. I've never seen any real evidence that the age of consent (for purposes of prostitution) is anything other than 18.

Here's a few tips for safety
1 Only pickup at BB an GG's, ask mamasan about the age
2 BYO voice-recordable mobile, smootly record the question "how old is she"
3 BYO voice-recordable mobile, smootly record the question "how old are you"
4 Bring the girl up to the room, go directly back down to the lobby/guard and ask for an extra ID check (and do #2)

In many countries there are broadly, three consent ages - to have sex with parents'/guardians' consent, to have sex without parents'/guardians' consent and to engage in prostitution (where legal/tolerated).

15 is the legal age of consent in Thailand, however the Prostituion Prevention and Suppression Act defines a child as being anyone under 18 years of age, so it's one to three years in the monkey house if you pay for sex with 15-17 year-old, double it for under 15s.
Prostitution Prevention and Suppression Act states:

Section 8
Whoever, for sexual gratification of that person or of another person,
commits sexual intercourse or any other act against a person over fifteen years but not over eighteen years of age, with or without his or her consent, in a prostitution establishment, shall be punished with imprisonment of one to three years and a fine of twenty thousand to sixty thousand baht.
If the offence under the first paragraph is committed against a child not over fifteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of two to six years and a fine of forty thousand to one hundred and twenty thousand baht.
If the offence under the first paragraph is committed against the spouse of the offender, and is not for sexual gratification of another person, the offender is not guilty.
Section 9
Whoever procures, seduces, or takes away another person to commit the act of prostitution, even with consent of such person, irrespective of whether the various acts which constitute the offence are committed inside or outside the Kingdom, shall be punished with imprisonment of one to ten years and a fine of twenty thousand to two hundred thousand baht.
If the offence under the first paragraph is committed against a person over fifteen years but not over eighteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of five to fifteen years and a fine of one hundred thousand to three hundred thousand baht.
If the offence under the first paragraph is committed against a child not over fifteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of ten to twenty years and a fine of two hundred thousand to four hundred thousand baht.
Outside of prostitution the offence is statutory rape:

participation of persons in the nature of raping
and/or murdering a girl, or by using weapons or
explosives, the offender shall be punished with

I think I posted this somewhere else, but last tour in BKK I was in one of the best known GGs of Soi Cowboy where a girl told me she was 17 and that she had been working bars for three years (so somehwere she was working at 14 =8^O ). When I asked Mamasan to make sure it wasn't just a langauge difficulty she tore a strip off the girl for telling me she was under twenty. The ID would have given her away, sort of - once out of the bar the under twenty thing wouldn't be a problem as far (as the bar was concerned) and the hotel, again according to Mamasan, "wouldn't care". She also claimed the major chain of GGs in Nana often employed under-twenties.

I met a girl who claimed to be 20 but looked very young. I checked her ID card. It looked legit.
My buddy called me in the middle of the night, as he had taken her home, and told me in a panic that she had admitted to being 16.
She also told him that she was using her sister's ID card.
I told him to get her the hell out of his hotel room, and to change hotels, leaving no forwarding address, immediately.
Overkill? Perhaps. Maybe I was just being paranoid.
