My tgf has decided that she would secretly try to get a visa to come to the USA for a visit. Never mind that I know or how, but she is not aware that I know of her efforts. I have a few questions that maybe someone can help with. She is apparently using the new electronic pin system that is in place now where she fills in her forms and requests an interview date. She is not now or ever has been in the night scene. She is from a middle class family and has a very good job with a management position in a large Thai corporation.. So, now the questions..... 1. Exactly what are the steps and the process now? When she goes for the interview is that where she will get a yes or no? Or, is that just the beginning of the process? 2. How long will the process take? In last week's stickman column it was quoted at 4-6 months. 3. What are the chances of her actually getting the visa? I would appreciate any insights and info and recent experience that any of you might have.

It all depend on whether it is for business or personal. Business visa is quiet different from personal visa. As long as the person is from respectable company with significant management position and have proper documentation in place then the visa could be clear in matter of weeks. One of my business associate just got his USA visa within 2-3 week to visit his supplier in USA.

Good point...and I left that out. This is a personal (vacation/holiday) trip for her. Her sister is also trying to get a visa at the same time.

The US embassy turns down lots of middle class, working Thai women for no reason at all, other than prejudice. If she's under 60, she will have a hard time getting a tourist visa. If she were male, it would be a different story. The online form works well, and allows her to fill in the blanks, print out the form, and take it all down to set up an appointment. There is also a good online checklist of the stuff she will need to take to the embassy when she signs up for the interview. The wait time to get the interview can be surmised from the BKK US embassy website -- they have a place to check the current backlog. She should be able to get the interview sooner than 4 to 6 months, but the website will give her an accurate prediction. Hopefully, she keeps her expectation levels low, as the Thai staff that works there is very dismissive, and the farang staff that works there is still operating under Vietnam-era R&R bias. At $100 USD a whack, it's a helluva money making machine, considering how little time is spent on each applicant. - Balls

Kev, to shine a bright light on the situation. two of my good friend in bkk were teachers at Assumption College on Sathorn and one dated a teacher at the same school, and the other dated a teacher at Chula (where he did part time work) both were approved tourist visa's they were both mid 20's age. a letter from the school was submitted on both applications. I am not sure about the length of time but I would guess 4 months sound about right. best of luck, atl

Your (her) chances are slim. I'd say less than 5%. I've posted on this forum many times about my nurse friend and her getting told no not once but twice. The second with a letter from my congressman on her behalf. Do a search and you can find the post. She was an ideal candidate and had great credentials. LS

Balls, You are correct. She has been given an interview date of late April. The question that I have is....is this interview the decision point where she is told yes or no? Or, is there then more time for investigation after the interview? And if she gets a yes, will she be eligible to travel right away, or is there a wait period?

kevalso, the interview is where she will be told yes or no. When she shows up with the initial papers, she submits them and supporting docs. Don't let the woman at that window push important docs back at you as "unnecessary." Her job is to take what you give her, and ask for more if need be. But she is not the decision maker, so don't let her vet the documents (this happened to my TGF and I, but I insisted that all the docs be submitted, which is what happened). After the initial gatekeeper gets the docs, she simply wraps them in a big rubber band, gives your TGF a piece of paper with the date of the real interview, and them sets the stack aside. When you show up on the interview day, you have to wait in a ridiculously long line (with bad A/C btw) and get a number, regardless of the stated time of your interview. Ours was at 7 am, but we didn't get to the front of the line until about 8 am, and were seen shortly thereafter. When you get your number on the interview day, they will ask if your TGF wants to be interviewed in Thai or English. I would recommend English, if possible, because the US farang who interviewed my TGF in Thai didn't speak it as well as he thought, and asked only rudimentary questions before telling her to f*** off. The interview happens as you talk through a speaker to the embassy guy, who sits behind plate glass. They didn't seem to care that I accompanied my TGF to the window; there were about 4 windows doing interviews simultaneously, and in all the cases where farangs went to the window with the TGF, no one cared. I also saw every single one of those couples turned down. It is at that minute or two interview that your interviewer will read the stuff that you submitted months before. He will then make a snap decision, based largely, as I said in the other post, on Vietnam-era R&R bias. There is no redress. Forget the letters from congress, the State Department doesn't care. If through some incredible stroke of luck your TGF is granted the visa, then she will have to get HIV, syhpillis, and other medical tests, and a chest xray to check for TB, etc. If she passes those, then she should be able to get the tourist visa. Bumrungrad knows the drill on the medical stuff, and has a standard set of tests/price for this stuff. Though the visa may be granted for 10 years, the real number of days she stays in the US is decided when she hits immigration in the States. They can theoretically turn her back right then, but that's highly unlikely. She'll get a couple of months; getting additional visas after that should be much easier. I agree that the chances are minimal, but never hurts to try. - Balls

My 24 year old niece got a tourist visa after a short 3 minute interview. She is a graduate of Bangkok University with a beginning job as a receptionist at a good company and speaks reasonable English (better than bar girl English). Also I filed a strong financial declaration in support of her. The interview was very strange and very short. They just asked why she didn't have a boy friend, where did she learn to speak English, and she left thinking she had been dismissed without a chance to plead her case. A 10 year visa came in the mail 3 days latter.
