Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 28 May 2007 :-
Student brawling scaring the public - Teens bring knives, own home-made guns
================================================
Sumalee sighed with relief as a long-awaited bus pulled up in front of the Central Rama II department store. Noticing technical students nearby reaching into their bags, she prepared to duck for cover. ''It is like a battleground here,'' said Seri Pansrinuan, 30, who oversees passenger vans in the area.

''Students get off a bus and confront rival school students, and a gang fight ensues. I saw one vocational school student almost cut off a high school student's arm with a long knife.

''Sometimes, they go on shootouts. Commuters just have to sprint for their lives. Inter-school brawling goes as far as throwing home-made bombs.''

Traffic at the bus stop is heavy, with a Big-C superstore on the opposite side of the road. The stop is also a major connection point with motorcycle taxis and passenger vans. At least eight high schools and vocational schools are in the neighbourhood.

Gang fights mostly erupt before and after school. The clashes are particularly fierce on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

''In one fight in which almost 100 students were involved, a van driver was unable to fit all the knives left abandoned at the scene into one duffel bag,'' said Mr Seri.

Students are not pursuing personal vendettas, said fourth-year vocational school student Weera Tulsachan, 18.

Rather, the fighting stems from a custom where students try to snatch the belt buckles of students from rival schools.

With a scar he earned from one fight still fresh on his head, Weera does not turn up at the bus stop empty-handed, but armed with a knife, knuckle-duster and a gun.

He made the gun himself. The modified air gun loaded with metal bullets or gunpowder is powerful enough to injure or even kill, he said.

Rama II residents are not alone in fearing students. Commuters using 11 other bus stops which authorities regard as ''highly dangerous'' are also worried they might get caught in the middle of a student brawl.

The Office of the Vocational Education Commission (Ovec), police and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) are trying to crack down on teen brawling.

Ovec secretary-general Weerasak Wongsombat said teachers, police and BMTA staff had been patrolling dangerous bus stops and dispersing student gatherings. If that doesn't work, police are called in.

Metropolitan Police Division 9 commander Pol Maj-Gen Phanurat Meephian says police can reach the scene in 10 minutes to break up a crowd.

Closed-circuit cameras were installed at 12 bus stops and other risky spots in Bangkok and Nonthaburi.

The number of gang fights had now fallen from around 7,000 incidents in 2004 to 1,724 in 2005 and 1,978 in 2006, according to Ovec figures.

In the first 4 months of this year, 374 gang fights were reported, and 217 confrontations intercepted annd broken up before they turned violent.

Student thugs were no longer limited to male students, said BMTA official Somboon Janwarin. Gang fights involving female students had also been reported at bus stops in Bang Khen, Min Buri market and Future Park Rangsit.

In a new plan to stamp out student fighting, vocational schools would reshuffle classes so as to discourage student gatherings on Fridays, by offering outside training or study tours in the afternoon, said Mr Weerasak.

Ovec has also launched a campaign to keep freshmen away from seniors in the first two weeks of school, when student hazing activities are normally carried out, he said.

Students would be sent on study tours instead, to show them career paths they could take if they study hard.

''The campaign will instil goals into first-year students before seniors get them into fights to show off their might,'' said Mr Weerasak.

Some students still show signs of resistance.

''I am not afraid of police. They detain and then release me when my parents show up at the police station,'' said vocational student Weera.

''No matter how many measures are introduced, they are unlikely to end inter-school fights.

''They are a deep-seated custom among vocational students,'' he said

Thanks folks, I welcome any (well intentioned) suggestions. It is obvious I know relatively little of thai society despite being a frequent visitor.

Just to clarify my personal situation, while I am not married I do have a stable "domestic arrangement" in Hong Kong which I would rather not lose at present. The price is I cannot come and go as I please, everything requires careful planning. Time spent in fleshpots like Bkk is particularly difficult to justify. Of course it is much easier if at least one of the ladies knows the score, it is hard to play this game on two sides. In USA very few young attractive women want to be the second woman, so that limits you to P2P or older, over 40 women who are desperate for sex. Of course in Thailand culture this may be different, with all these stories about second wives and such.

I am quite familiar with the scene in New York, where the distiction between P2P and not is crystal clear. A young student or model wanna-be who wants a "sugar daddy" will make it abundantly clear that money is expected. Her main concern will be your long term ability to pay, since life is very expensive in New York. She can tell at a glance how much your suit and your watch cost, and will be very interested to see your business card. It sounds like in Bangkok a much broader range of women expect direct financial support, but at the same time the game is less direct, she will "lose face" if money issue is too upfront.

nyc boy

Quote: from voyager on 1:52 pm on May 28, 2007

from my understanding, Voyager is not looking for the run of the mill sponsored girl like the boys in BKK do.

you are asking for a paid escort???

looks good, can be taken to nice (expensive) places to eat, plays the part etc etc. all the while will not be a hassle (about your arrangement in HKG or otherwise) and expects a financial bounty but not to the limit of the ladies in NYC??

are you sure that you want a student for that?? or are you trying to imply to the forum here that you want us to put you into direct contact with a service that can abide by this. 5555. j/k

One-Stop shop, like the BOI for ladies.... don't think so...

I have no doubt that there are Thai guys that are connected and can set you up. but caveat emptor.
and you (as mentioned) dont have the length of time to put into getting something like this, at this moment. I do know of great girls (as do other forum members, I am sure) that have the Thai sponsored 'daddy' or act the 'mia noi' part out, or even the unsponsored 'gik', if this is what you want?
time is essential. not only to play the field, and get to know them and their situation and for them to size you up for longterm financial resources. otherwise why would they drop their current daddy for you??

the suggestions from LY and Seajohn are spot on.

Report from The Nation dated Monday 4 June 2007 :-

Students prefer TV to textbooks, poll finds
===============================

Students devote more of their after-class hours to leisure than learning-related activities, a survey by Srinakharinwirot University has found.

"Students give less time to homework, school assignments, preparation for academic contests and tutorial classes than to leisure activities like watching television," Dr Sakchai Niranthawee told a seminar on students' educational responsibility.

Sakchai has taught at the Srinakharinwirot University's Faculty of Education and conducted the survey, which questioned 12,158 students.

The survey found that reading, listening to the radio, playing sports, chatting on the phone and doing household chores were among the most common activities outside class.

Sakchai said the survey also revealed that students were given lots of homework and school assignments to do after class, and thus they preferred to keep their free time for leisure rather than learning.

"The education system should provide opportunities for students to explore their own abilities, interest and needs," he said.

Dr Lekha Piya-achariya, an adviser to the Office of the Education Council, said the amount of homework set by teachers had prevented students from learning how to manage their time and learning more on their own.

"Time management is one of the necessary skills in life," she said.

Lekha suggested Sakchai's findings could be used to encourage students to increase their knowledge.

"If students spend a lot of time watching television, then there should be good programming. Television programmes can give knowledge. Good television programmes can be used as teaching materials," she said.

Good to see that playing sport was one of the extra activities. Thailand really does fall behing many countries in its sporting influence and it could add greatly to the general fitness of our much loved "service providers"
