... trying to understand why the Thai culture and people are the way they are, I did quite a bit of homework on the IQ part... the summary:
> Thai average IQ = 91

I have found that dealing with adult Thais (even many Thai-educated professionals) is easier if I treat them as adolescents... that seems to help me anticipate how they might respond to the world around them... it feels so incredibly condescending, which is not my style... but, it seems to work for them too, and they seem to accept it just fine (maybe that a cultural misunderstanding on my part, or their kreng jai thing, or maybe it is the child in them conceding to the adult... maybe I am over-analyzing here).
... it is a sad fact, but a significant percentage of the people in this nation are developmentally retarded.

This thing to alter the names of things and refusing to accept facts is not due to mental retardation, at least not directly.
It is a way to make them self feel good and superior by driving the farang crazy and then feeling so superior saying
"farang bah!"
And please dont tell me its due only to Thai being a tonal language, I can see when I speak a tone wrong and when people are taking the piss and "pretend not to understand".
Last trip a Thai lady (not a bargirl) was explaining me very seriously
"Thai people are a more refined race than farang, so many things you do we can not do because we are not animals like you are."
My answer was

There's really just two possibilities, and neither are pleasant to consider:
- You're loonietunes, and are making up a lot of this stuff, in hopes of garnering attention.
- You married a loonietunes woman, and are telling yourself that all of this is normal.
Judging by your past posting history on this forum, I would tend to go with #1 of these possibilities, but honestly neither paint you as an entirely normal person.

... I've not a direct source yet, but several farang teachers tell me that the Thai education system teaches young Thais that they ARE superior to foreigners... honest to God, in just those simple words.
... now, this would conform to my theory that the privileged Thais classes have for generations systematically used Thai institutional infrastructure to passify the uncleansed Thai prai to keep them in their places... accomplished in a different way, but no different in effect than what Kim, Ceausescu, Hitler, Mao did/does.
... the deception here being: "You are better than other people, and are doing better than them, so sit down, shut-up and be happy with what you have."
... that would work quite well in a time when uneducated Thais relied upon the local village kamnan for what to believe, because they could not read.
... fast forward to 2011, with the increasing access to the Internet arise realities which are at odds with what they have long been told is the truth ("What!? The animal Malays have 2+ times the per capita GDP as Thais?").
