Interesting story.

I was always told Thai couldn't fly there as it was a proivate airport solely owned by Bangkok Air...but Thaksin shall have his way...sounds like someone upset him at Bangkok Air.

THAI's B737-400, with 149 seats, has a maximum take-off weight of 68 tonnes, or about 20% over the airport's existing capacity.

Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, president and chief executive of Bangkok Airways, said landing a 737-400 at Samui airport could pose safety problems.

However, an aviation expert said THAI could reduce the weight of cargo, passengers and fuel on the 737-400 to meet the limit.

You don't have to be an aviation expert.
A Boeing B737-400 flying with reduced weights should not have too much trouble with a 6000ft runway.

Notice also that the MAXIMUM take off weight of 68 tonnes was quoted. A lot of aircraft weight is fuel and the short hop from Bangkok to Koh Samui shouldn't affect the loads too much except in very hot weather.

I have landed and taken off at Lamphang in a Thai B737-400. Lamphang has a 1500 metre runway.

I don't think that Bangkok Airways are looking forward to loosing their monopoly.

More importantly this will increase tourism to Koh Samui
and greatly commercialise it !

It is a private airport, but I'm not sure that TG ever asked if they could fly into Samui...maybe just afraid that Dr. Prasert (Bangkok Airways) would say no.

I think this is to do with Thaksin's Thai Privilege Card project...TG is one of the main suppliers...but it doesn't fly to one of the country's most popular destinations.

Can't have that...let's ask Dr. Prasert if we can fly there and hope he doesn't charge too hefty landing and handling fees.

There's the answer - Dr Prasert will up the landing and handling fees for non-Bangkok Airways aircraft.

Didn't know it is private though ?

Interesting

Thai Airways International details new destinations
Thai Airways International will add Chennai (Madras), Guilin and Luang Prabang to its international route network. New city pairs on Thai's existing route network will also be added as well as frequency increases on routes from Bangkok. The airline is to take delivery of two Boeing 747-400 aircraft in October 2003. The airline already operates 16 of the type.
The new destinations, routes and frequencies will mostly come into effect from 26 October 2003. Thai operates a fleet over 80 aircraft.

Another angle on TG going to Samui is Bangkok Airways desire to take a stake in TG's proposed low cost carrier.

Either way, the weight remains an issue, and although TG could use ATR's instead of 737's they still need to compete with Bangkok Airways' very sexy 717's.

Things should become clearer after the TG reshuffle is finalized early October.

"TG reshuffle"?
Isn't that what they do at Long Gun?

Negative thoughts, from some personal experiences when I lived there.

Expensive.

I don't like the Samuians (they consider themselves quite different to the mainland Thais) These days with the influx of major tourism, I'd imagine they are quite diluted. They tend to have a habit of holding you to ransom, especially on public transport.

The island itself is pretty, you'll have a great time. I'd prefer to spend my money elsewhere and haven't been since I moved away in 1991.
