The government WILL make the wrong mistake, and if they're unlucky, the south will continue to melt down. Muslims are not the problem, they are the solution. And while I am personally repulsed by their religion, they cannot be forced to change, or be marginalized. To defeat the Islamic militants, the government needs to solicit the help of the Muslim majority. To do this, they must work with, and do something for, the Muslim majority. This means social programs, and encouraging the growth of normal Islam (not refusing to fund Muslim schools, and forcing Buddhism upon them). Anyway, Thai people generally treat Muslims as non-Thais. As such, it's not within them to nurture Muslims, or to encourage them to help solve the problem.

Hello gents, Imho the situation in said region has degenerated at present to a point the TH State should immediately allow an independent international body to put the direct question to the people of said region whether or not they want independence. That is imho what the millions ethnic Malay Muslims of said region rightfully and for nearly one century now aspire to. Moreover that would imho stabilize the international political situation in the region. The contrary might turn into an escalating regional violent conflict, most likely with furthered input from Malaysia and Indonesia, topped with violent acts north of the troubled region. TH State authorities declared “not to know the enemy” – the de facto situation on the ground indeed seems to confirm that -- hence imho the TH State can not possibly win that conflict militarily, not locally let alone in case it escalates / geographically spreads. Ethnic Chinese “trained to be a cop”, later affluent telecom operator, at present Thailand’s PM neo-fascist ToXic succeeded in socially/economically ‘beating’ the TH Buddhist system by ‘joining’ it. Hence his personal obsession to repress what he publicly constantly qualifies as a southern common criminal drug related bandit terrorist minority. That is imho either a stupid mistake or a blatant lie. In either case it is propaganda attempting to justify his murderous endeavors. Imho a large majority of the common Thai people do not want to keep the Malay Muslims of the south in ‘their’ Buddhist Kingdom for the simple reason they know those people generation after generation do not recognize the King as ‘their’ royalty since they have a Sultan, refuse to speak ‘their’ language and finally are not Theravada Buddhists whilst nearly all ethnic Thais are (interesting to note: most of the Muslims in TH outside of said region are descendants of the political prisoners taken by the TH State at demand of their de facto Nipponese allies at the local start of World War II and transported to prison camps around BKK and Ayuthaya). The ethnic TH have no desire for their Buddhist sons, conscripted in the TH army, some of them send to the south for the full two years, to possibly die for what they believe not to be a cause worthy of the TH State. Especially since the murder by the TH State of roundabouts 90 innocent Malay Muslim civilians at Thak Bai in Nov 2004 by pushing them handcuffed into a river or literally layering them into trucks for transportation with suffocation as a result. The only thing PM ToXic could come up with was to have the Thai Air force drop tens of thousands paper folded peace birds over the region a month later. In the Land of Smiles also torture and murder is smilingly committed and covered up. TH since hundreds of years is a society in which respect is induced by fear. After the usual bogus investigation the military who perpetrated the Thak Bai murder were let of the hook a couple of months ago. What else to expect in a State with kangaroo State commissions of all sorts and kangaroo State courts, except when it comes to penal and public defamation trials initiated by the powers that be, their family and their trading corporations against the press reporting on their acts of graft. The real fear for lower tier political opponents within civil society being that of physical elimination by mafia elements controlled by the powers that be, often neatly integrated in lawful State activities such as policing e.g. ToXic’s “war on drugs” with thousands of deaths in five years time. Internationally condemned, imho rightfully so. Former Thai PM Anand most critical of present PM ToXic’s handling of the situation in the south can of course not be expected to state that a majority of the Malay Muslim people of the South desire independence. According to the Bangkok Post of 27 July 2005 page 4: Mr. Anand however said the motives behind the violent attacks that have people in the south of TH living in fear for the past one and a half year were NOT different from the causes that used to trigger unrest in the region 30 years ago, or even 100 years ago. Mr. Anand also reminded of HM the King’s Dec 1975 New Year message in which – after a shocking violent incident in Pattani in Dec 1975 – he urged his subjects to unite and co-operate and to save the country they must NOT put the interests of “the minority” Buddhists in the South before that of “the majority” Muslims. Mr. Anand concluded “it has been 30 years now. But we have still not learned from our past mistakes.” The word “we” imho meaning ToXic and his fascist mafia clan at present running the State exclusively to further personal power and enrichment with as usual too little too late for the public cause in general and in this case for the millions of Malay Muslims of the south, in daily life mostly bullied and in case considered a nuisance imprisoned or even murdered by the TH State -- their hired agents from time to time happen to be e.g. teachers, monks etcetera -- and such for more than a century now. Have a nice day.

You know - they want independence, give them independence -- behind a tall, big wall. The ufortunate truth, though, is that even giving them exactly what they ask for will NOT end or curb the violence. You give them their piece of land, they will then wonder why the Thais didn't give them more - repeat ad nauseam. The Israelis are pulling out of the Gaza strip, yet the various extremist islamic organisations continue the killings. It's never enough.

Taking Sir Barebrains logic a little further: The Great Plans of the United States should be set aside for AmInd Independence (and the ICBMs located there). Scotland should be allowed total autonomy from London (And the British nuclear forces in Holy Loch). The Islamic Chinese get The Gobi (and the ICBMs located therein). Aboriginal Australians shall receive the Outback of course. The Maori get complete control of the North Is of NZ. etc., etc., etc.... What do you think the above will do to Global peace and prosperity?

That would depend on which "International Independent Body" is looking at it.

According to the article, the majority of Muslims do not want independence from Thailand, probably because they know that it most likely would turn into a radical Islamic state, and they would loose the freedoms they now have. That of course, is probably the "best case" scenario. Worst case would be a devastating civil war within the newly independent nation. If it really were possible to put up a wall between such a newly created Islamic state and the rest to Thailand, maybe that sounds like the best solution. But many moderate Muslims would probably flee into the rest of Thailand, and the Islamic militants would then have more territory that they claim is rightfully their own. The global jihadi movement will not stop until world domination is completed.

Let's be honest. These folk have f*** all, they have only the means to wage an irrelevant war against those who they have been told are the aggressors. They have nothing to lose, they have no industry down there (they are a victim of thier own misdoings in this) give them a state that they can ruin, and then in 10 years take it back with a whole new generation who have had enough of the 'shia' t bullshit and who want to make some real money, this is the part of the equation they are missing, the education to make a bit of cash... Just my honest opinion Bash

Do we get to surround these 'independent states' by tall walls.... and fill them with water? (grin)

This is unfortunately true, and it's only a matter of time until they claim Bangkok (or an effort to liberate their Bangkok 'imprisoned' brethren. I will maintain that the only way to combat their extremism, is with a similar extremism...
