Quote: from Root Rat on 8:13 am on Oct. 14, 2003 Another angle on TG going to Samui is Bangkok Airways desire to take a stake in TG's proposed low cost carrier. Either way, the weight remains an issue, and although TG could use ATR's instead of 737's they still need to compete with Bangkok Airways' very sexy 717's. Things should become clearer after the TG reshuffle is finalized early October.
I don't really see how weight can be an issue as I have said before Thai use their B737-400's on runways smaller than Ko Samui. The Boeing B717 (really a McDonald-Douglas MD-87 100 seater version) The Thai B737-400 http://www.thaiair.com/flying/b737400-7341/s1.htm Have 150 seats which is quite a few more than the B717. http://www.thaiair.com/flying/boeing.htm#5 Thai have been trying to offload their AT-72's for a while now and I would be very surprised if they used them to Ko Samui. I asked the Captain at Lampang(LPT) how they operated onto what I thought was a small runway. He said, "Reduced weights." Lampang is from what I gather 5,800ft and not quite as short as I originally thought. 1775 x 30m. Samui is 2060m x 45 m. Which I think must have been recently extended as it used to be about 4,900ft. Samui is longer and wider than Lampang so I see no problem for the Thai B737-400's getting in and out of there with about 140 Pax.

Hermanolobo, Good points. I'm getting out of my depth here, but I've also heard reference to the LCN of the runway (something to do with the runway load capacity??). So there may be factors other than just the runway length that are setting maximum take off and landing weights.

It has to do with the substrucutre and how thick the base is and how many bodies the KohSamui mafia may have buried under it as well. They should use helicopters, plenty of room then.

LCN = Load Classification Number. If Samui can take a Boeing B717-200(aka McDac MD87) It should be able to take a reduced weight B737-400. It is only about an hour hop so the pilot can keep the fuel load down within divertion-limits and so take an almost full load of pax.

The Rolls Royce powerplant of the 717 (aka MD95) are brand new (and silent) technology. Airbus380 aka "Deux-Ponts"

Airbus the only thing stolen from the Caravelle was the rear engine configuration. Did you know that the Caravelle S-210 had the same nose and cockpit as the Comet four ?? Same engines(Avons) as well ? I have never flown in any of the DC-9 series and then the MD-80 series. A friend of mine used to fly DC-9-14 freighters in the US. Sadly the payload-range of the DC-9 was far better than the BAC 1-11 hence the better sales although the Caravelle sold well. I think there are a couple of Caravelles still flying somewhere in Africa ! Somebody from American Airlines was telling me that the MD-80 series was their 'bread-and-butter' aircraft i.e. Very efficient and very reliable. Apparently it is so quiet in the cockpit headsets are not necessary.

I used to fly American Airlines all the time, and the MD-80 are fairly quiet. I guess it's becasue both engines are on the tail. Seems like all the newer designs have them on the wing.

Bangkok Airways have Boeing B717-200's (2 or 3). ATR-42-200/500's and I think some ATR-72's. I don't have an ABC World Aiways guide to hand so I cannot be sure which aircraft they use on which service. My guess is a Mix of ATR's and Boeing 717's to Samui and ATR's to Utapoa. I don't like the ATR very much. It reminds me of the plastic aeroplane kits I used to make as a kid. I once flew an ATR-72 from London Stansted to Hannover. The German lady said to me that she thought it was a very good service, "But they use such old planes!" "Yes dear, all of three months old!" I think she had a point though. Of Turbo-props the Fokker F-50 is far better. Air Andaman use them. More like a real aeroplane than a plastic kit.

I couldn't get the link to the original post. When is this to actually be an option for flying to KS and will this drive the cost down? (but with all the flight insurance I might need to buy , it may not be a bargain?)
