Whats this about 10pm closing. Can you tell me more. Going to be out feb 1st for 3 weeks will this happen buy then. If/when this happens, I will be going more often to see my firiend in PI. Might even do the trip to Dubai good reading on that in this furom, never been there yet. The flu thing, well I have been in worse. Try living in West africa when in the area there is a massinve surge in yellow fever and a few other things that can mean the end of you. I ma sure there were things out there killing people that the medical world don't know about.

Ukshaga,

There has been mucho debate about the thai government intending to close bars earlier. Times proposed have been 10pm, 11pm, 12pm and 1am. A decision was to be made on an earlier closing time on chinese new year (yesterday) but has been postponed until March 1st when a midnight or 1am closing time is expected to be announced (for all entertainment venues). So if your going out in February you should just see the tail end of 2am closing.

See other threads in this category on this issue. Seems at the moment that closing times are not uniform across thailand and that Bangkok seems to be suffering worse than anywhere else. It remains to be seen how any changes will be enforced..if they actually are enforced.

If you consider the amount of money that the P4P industry brings in to Thailand plus a great deal of there furlang under paid work force are there for that late beer and P4P a early closing time would kick the Krap out of the inflow of money to Thailand. I have only one thing to say to the powers at bee in Thailand “DUUUUR, think”, ”McFly is there anybody in there”

This has been discussed ad nauseam in other threads - the general consensus is that even if the p4p (falang oriented) industry were to disappear overnight, Thailand's economy as a whole would barely notice it. I tend to agree, since the (falang) p4p industry represents just an infinitessimal amount of the total tourist economy.

Of course, such draconian measures might not even be considered (IMO) if there were less farang acting like asses in those same p4p venues... It's usually the noisy, annoying ones destroying it for the rest :- (

The wise and sadly missed in my case 'Sauron' has said many times that P4P is not for the farangs but the Thais. He quoted 90-95% of this activity is for Thais and NOT farang ! To my mind this puts a very different spin on the moralisation of P4P and the closing times?

Hermo, Sauron was probably right. On an average day there can't be much more than 20-30,000 sex-tourists in Thailand, at least from Farangland and the affluent Northern Asian nations.

I'd doubt that too many of them would stay home because of the bird flu anyhow. They seem to be more interested in the Thai Wingless Chicken...

back to the original post bird flu all over uk news channels and newspapers now some of the less quality publishers are on about a sars like epedemic

and its just come out on the bbc world news that the thai goverment knew for two weeks that they had bird flu in the country but didnt want to panic the public

its looking like how the uk goverment handled the foot and mouth outbreak a few years back

and having the pm eating chicken on tv was exactly the same as when the uk agriculture minister gave a hamburger to his daughter durring the cjd outbrack and that was great pr stunt (not)

Well, for anyone who even knows a little bit about the avian flu, there's not much of a stunt involved. The chicken, once grilled/cooked or prepared, is safe to eat. The virus does not survive the heat. You can only get it from direct contact with an infected chicken carcas, and so far the flu has not progressed to human/human diffusion.

In summary - seems like it's pretty damn safe to go. Furthermore, as in previous cases, the avian flu appears to only be lethal to the very young, or the very old (similar to SARS in that respect), so, again, most of us have nothing to fear.

Of course, this won't stop the media from spreading Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (or Hermie from making some George W/Alien connection of it all).

The way I see it is that if this becomes more acute in the next two weeks, coupled with the beginning of low season, and I might end up with a cheap vacation again, and prices dropping (or becoming 'very negotiable').

Same with early closing times (not that they will affect me mid-february), as this simply means I don't have to wait until 2:00am to pick up company

Make lemonade....

Early closing time for me is less beer, smarter belly and LONG L/T.

Hmmm...not a bad idea.
