Most Favored Nation Status is now called Normal Trade Relations Status. The name was changed in 1998.

While this status is issued on a permanent basis to most nations that are WTO members, China is one that must have their status renewed each year.

For anybody that is interested in the truth, China has had MFN/NTR status since 1980. Unless George Bush, Jr. has been president since then, he nor his administration initially granted this status.

This renewal of MFN/NTR status is done by presidential decree but can be over-ruled by Congress. This status has been granted by EVERY president since 1980 and EVERY Congressional session has seen fit NOT to over-ride the decree.

Let's not blame GB Jr for the China policy. He is the only President in the past ten years that has publicly stated that an invasion of Taiwan would be met with US military action.

That great emancipator and freedom fighter, William Jefferson Clinton, never said it.

See the following link. That's where I got my information:

I find it particularly amusing to see the US criticising the human rights situation in other countries
And I find it particularly amusing for Thaksin to lose his temper and stomp his feet "not fair not fair" when all the other countries who are on "the list" seem to simply ignore it as a political propaganda that it is. I think the Thais might find his behavior amusing, too. Thaksin has created the news on this one by his comments, if he had said nothing, there would be no discussion and no coverage of this non-news-worthy "report".

Also, it should be noted that the exact quote from Thaksin was in Thai, not in English. The Nation and CNN translated the Thai word he used to "useless". The Bangkok Post translate it to "annoying". Call it "translation difficulties" or look at freedom of the press in Thailand and make your own conclusions on what Thaksin said.

Thaksin hasn't had a great PR day today. He also inflamed the EGAT situation by saying the protest by employees EGAT is "becoming more like a campaign to overthrow the government". The complete quote I do not have beacaseu the website for "The Nation" seems to be down, and of course, the Bangkok Post did not publish the complete quote because it would embarass the PM.

Seriously, these are the kinds of situations where I feel embarassed to call this country my home.
And one of the great things about having a US passport is that you are welcome to make your home is most any any other country you want. If I'm embarrased about something, I try to change it.

Before I get flamed as a Bush-lakky, it should be known that I will probably be the last one to vote for George Bush.

A passport that became better than a USA one was the British one. Now I think that those from Canada, the Scandinavian countries and Switzerland may be ahead in terms of being welcomed universally.

'Annoying' certainly makes more sense.

Calling the US a 'useless' friend would just be inane. Even 'annoying' probably has a more diplomatic English equivalent - but I suppose we can take it that Thaksin IS annoyed. No doubt he was equally irritated when a certain exalted Thai personage took him to task on the same subject, but of course couldn't say so.

Complaining about foreigners meddling in matters which don't concern them is good political box office practically anywhere.

Yes, New Zealand one should be good.

Diplomatic passport? Nah! No big deal. A diplomatic passport only gives diplomatic inmunity (or any benefit for that matter) to the country where the holder has been sent and registered as member of the mission there. Otherwise no much value.

I'm certainly not blming Bush on this one, as I vehemently disagreed with Clinton doing the same.

lso, he might have said, AT ONE TIME, his little statement about military action, but his recent quip to Taiwan about not talking about any silly notions like independence, pretty much sold out that earlier bold statement.

I wonder if he even remembers every having said that, seeing as he's now cushy with the Chinese. That earlier link regarding the conversation with the 11-year old pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I wouldn't have taken your responses as lackey-ism, so no worries.

Well, I don't have a US passport, but rather a super-safe Austrian passport - either way, I agree on the hands-on approach, though in the case of the currrent administration in the US, I stand to be in a win-win situation by just sitting back and watching it play out.

Either way, right now the Dems seem hell-bent on assuring Bush a landslide victory with their endorsing of Kerry.
