I wouldn't count Thaksin out yet.

Who'd follow him? What candidates are there, which you would find preferable?

Not saying he's the political saint, but just curious who'd be better?

anyone !!! thai people are getting enough of him hopefully they will boot him out
otherwise its their on fault a bit like a lot of countries at the moment really. Wow lets let a total prick rule because we have noone else brilliant I just love democracy NOT

daffy I know your reply already what could replace democracy, that isnt an answer for it failing.
The same as saying their is noone else is not a reason this bloke should stay in power.

Any bar girl at soy cowboy would do, im sure the bars would be back open again and no innocent people would be murdered,, hey thats two plus points already.Have to have a team behind her though pulling the strings an all at press conferences.
Now that sounds familiar too damm.Nothin beats a good formular.

A BG for PM?!?!?!?!
That would give a whole new twist to the word POPULIST.
With every question/demand from the population the PM would answer : Up to you!
The people would love the new PM. Atleast in the first year, after that it depends on what they actualy get.
I think I would prefer a BG over my Harry Potter any day of the week.

Since when did any government losing a couple of mid-term bi-elections spell disaster? TRT didn't even contest one of them.

Can anyone here actually name the leader of the opposition?..this great credible alternative.

If you think the Thai's are sick of Thaksin then I suggest you spend very little time talking politics with any middle class thais.

It never fails to amuse me the sad rhetoric that appears every time Thaksin makes a point of doing anything against the nightlife or what he and many people see as the moral decline of the nation.

Nope, Thailand is there as Fat freddie sex Tourists place to dump the rather overladed bag of semen as he cannot get laid at home.

Thaksin is still very popular, people will quote to you he had the nuts to introduce the 30B health schmeme. Oh it'll never work they cry. 4 years on the system seems to work rather well, even I carry my card. I am well acquaited recently with two people who had severe need to call upon it. Both were very greatful.

I'm no particular fan of the man in reality, to me he is far too arrogant for his own good, and he sometimes is far too smart for his own good, but to suggest he will suffer a crumbling defeat in the next General Election is naive to say the least.

Stupid response - and it's an illustration WHY someone like Thaksin is in power.

*anyone!!* is not an electable person, neither is *any BG* -- unless a compelling candidate to oppose him emerges, Thaksin will win by default, which is why in my post I specifically asked about suggestions who a qualified candidate would be, to avoid the kind of reply you provided.

No matter what everyone (particularly those who understand very little about economics on that scale) has to say negatively about Thaksin, he also has done lots to put Thailand on the map, improve the economy, and has made attempts to improve Thailand. He certainly has weaknesses (expressing public opinion is one of them - I am reminded of his gaffe when the Patani deaths happened "They were weakened by Ramadam"), but I wonder if there is a candidate available that could unseat him, and be more successful in improving Thailand.

Both of these factors are critical, or else you just end up with another case of nepotism.

thai people are getting enough of him

You speak for the Thai people?

Aphisit Vejajiva, the leader of the Democrats, is actually a very credible politician. He is an old Etonian and Oxford University graduate and, as he is in his early 40s, he has plenty of time to become PM.

Thaksin's popularity has definitely declined. The TRT recently did an 'unofficial poll' in Bangkok which showed that if they had an election now, the TRT wouldnt win any seats. The reality, though, is that elections are won upcountry - Bangkok only accounts for about 10% of total seats. Out side of the south, TRT politicians basically dominate the entire political landscape - a monkey could be head of the TRT and they would still win the election.

The only way that Thaksin is going to lose power is if the TRT crumbles from within with different factions splitting off to form new parties or merge with the Democrats. It may well happen one day but there is no sign of it happening now or in the foreseeable future.

Chill out man, Of course I only talk to lower class this is more from the opinion of my thai wife.
Of course the guy is popular with some folks.
Like I said its there country there choice.
Noones saying its a sure thing, personally I dont like party poopers or freedom pinchers so I dont like the guy.that goes for anywhere in the world.

Noone is being naieve just hoping, there is a difference
without hope what do you have.
Of course hes done some good but too damm repressive for my liking.
How the thai people see it will unfold at the next election
The shampagne stays in the fridge.
He is far too big headed for his own good and for the people so it will end in tears.
It always does.

Ex pat with Thai wife:

He has performed well in difficult times and has gained a lot of respect accross the world with hios attempted (??) reforms.

We all have fun but he has tried, comments about his long time commitment to his ideas is too true.

If he wants to cure anything he need to stick with it from start to finish and for get where heis personal finances are coming from.

Good man but money motivated, he will still be there in 4 years time but not alot will have changed.

Sorry to say the above but if he committed to one thing at a time he would stand more of o chance of fixing the coruption that is everywhere.

Have fun in los all

hmmm.............Thai Rak Thai

More like thai/chinese rak thai/chinese from my experience working in business under it.

remember when thaksin wanted to buy a premeirship team. That was about the most hypocritical thing I have witnessed in my whole life.

Sure he can buy part an institution in england but some poor brit cant even open a half million baht restaurant in his country without having to hide ownership behind secret corporations and such.

I agree that most thai's (my wife only recently) can see through his regime.

I hope he is out.

sorry I meant that most "cant" see thru his regime.

I ask my wife why thaksin doesnt try and help poor people that excel in matiom with university loans?

that would threaten his and his peers standing in the long run. thats ironic of me to say a thai thinks about long run. no offence but if you ask most thais if they want 1 dollar today or 20dollars tomorrow 9 times out of 10 it would be the $1 today.

cheers all,
atl

ps. fortunatly I am not in LOS now or I would be up tonight watching out for cronies after this post
