I'm with Abrak.

People don't get beaten up for no reason. One can presume that this happened late at night. And that it involved some lowlife drunk farang getting lippy with a similarly lowlife Thai guy, probably strung out on yaba.

Frankly, the only surprising thing is that it doesnt happen more often.

I have little sympathy for either victim.

So few facts. So many assumptions.

Do we know the farang was a tourist?

Did he have an altercation with a Thai that resulted in a fatal beating or was he knocked down by a bike whilst crossing the street and then kicked to death?

As for people not getting beaten up for no apparent reason - open your eyes. Wars break out for no apparent reason. Terrorists kill and mame for no apparent reason. Some folks just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and fall victim to someone else's uncontrollable aggression.

And what did everyone else do while this was going on - just sit and watch and then carry on drinking?

Seems when a farang is murdered in Thailand now, no one bats an eyelid. Everyone is tarred with the same brush and it's assumed they got what they deserved. Maybe this guy did. But it's just too easy to leap to conclusions and not give a shit about anyone else.

yes, very sketchy, here's a different version from another forum, again very reliable sources you'll see and the witness is positive the thai guy was arrested -than released

"I have to disagree with you about your speculation that this incident did not occur. I know a Thai guy who told me about it before it ever hit these boards. He personally knows the alleged assailant. He visited the alleged assailant in jail. The alleged assailant has since, per my source, been released. Whether or not the farang died (and again, I hope that this is not the case) is a matter on which I have no knowledge. I do know this, the guy I know told me about this incident the day after it happened. He works at NaNa, and he has less than no reason to lie to me. Obviously, I didn't see it with my own eyes, so I can't guarantee that it happened. That being said, I can't for the life of me understand why my source would have lied about it, given that he has absolutely nothing to gain from making this up"

And to go on here's a very real US beat up who should make many off you happier to live in BKK. Works for me at least:

Yes. I've seen it happen !

Last week on Monday (12-dec) around midnight.
I was sitting at the street side of the beer bar at Nana Hotel and this is what happend (actually not at the Nana car park but in front of the bar between Nana hotel and Suk rd) ) :
* A guy (couldn't see if it was a farang, but lets assume he is) passed the street from the bar to the other side.
* At the same time a motorbike drove into soi 4 (from Suk rd) and when that passing guy showed up all in a sudden in front of him he had to brake really hard. Result: bike collapsed and Thai guy fell of it. It think the speed of the motorbike was not that high, but maybe too high for a busy soi like soi 4.
* The bike didn't hit the passing farang, and for 1-2 seconds the Thai guy layed down on the pavement.
But then he jumped up real quick and rushed to the farang and started beating him.
A few punters from the bar there went to to scene (might wanted to help their buddy out).
* Then the crowd moved around them and I couln't see much anymore, I was not really into moving nearer for 'disaster tourism' purposes (and I was talking with a nice girl at the bar also, took her to Nana Disco afterwards, but that's another story).
* After a few minutes I saw the Thai guy getting back on his MB and driving further in to soi 4, haven't seen him back.
* Then I tought everything was back to normal but after 10-15 min both the police and the ambulance showed up there, and the guy was put in the ambulance.

Well that's everything I know abt it, seemed to me as an accidental thing, but worked out quite nasty for the farang involved.
Don't hang me up om this one, it was happening 30-40 meters away from me, I wasn't drunk by the way !

So guys, be carefull when passing the streets of Bangkok (and other towns also), some nasty things can happen !

Cheers

Tilac

There seems to be much bullshit floating around, with very little factual substance. About the only thing that really did seem to have taken place was that a farang got beaten up.

It's true that normally people don't get beaten up for no reason, but occasionally, innocent people do get involved, so it's probably best to withhold judgments about "low-class" farangs until we get the lowdown. I can't help but think of an incident in Hong Kong earlier this year when an Aussie investment banker got attacked outside a bar, his fingers being cut off. The perps, purported to be the Triads, simply confused him with another white man who has caused problems earlier (BBC ran this story; you can find it on http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4385153.stm ). So yes, innocent people do get hurt sometimes.

At any rate, I am increasingly beginning to grow weary of the whole Nana zoo.

Interesting how many 'cast iron' I know someone who knows etc versions we have...all different...the guy works at nana, he was a passing motorcyclist etc.

Out of interest

The farang who died having his skull punctured by a ladyboys heel circa 2 years ago

woman stabbed 10 times on sukhumvit a couple of days ago (courtesy of S05)

The best of all, the disappearing babies when they built the new Saphan Sarasin in Phuket, something about bridge builders who are quasi modo characters who need to build babies skulls into bridges. That one even made the national press.

I knew a guy who was mates with the sister of one of the disappearing babies....

So who is right...AP or vox?

It's important to find out what exactly happened, but I don't know how that can be done. A journalist friend who lives in BKK but doesn't indulge in the P4P scene thinks two separate incidents might have been melded together in the rumor mill: one involving a farang hit by accident by a motorbike, the other a fight between a farang and Thai that wasn't fatal.

A death is always a tragedy, but it's one thing if the guy was hit by a motorbike and died of the injuries he suffered, very much another if he was beaten to death by a stranger outside Nana. That kind of violence - a Thai beating a farang to death for no reason - is rare in LOS. When a farang dies at the hands of a Thai, it's usually a lover's quarrel or a drug deal gone bad. In fact, that is the pattern with murders all over the world, no matter what country. Most murders occur with a relationship or family, while the remainder are almost all between participants in some sort of criminal activity.

Even in the U.S., the chances of falling victim to an act of street violence are small. If you factor out alcohol, commerical sex and bad neighborhoods, the chances are almost nil. In other words, your biggest chance of getting killed by a stranger is if you a male under 35, out late at night, under the influence of alcohol, in the wrong neighborhood, looking for sex. Even then, the chance, in an absolute sense, is very small.

Tourists in Thailand run a much bigger risk of dying in a traffic accident or succumbing to alcohol poisoning than being killed by a stranger.

Fantastic... go on holiday to a country and pick to befriend the highest class of individual...

you should really learn to read before you start spouting off.

I never said I was friends with the guy, only that I knew him, big difference. and yeah, I'm friends with his girlfriend, though keep my distance because I don't want to be the excuse for his next beating of her. though hopefully for her (and everyone's) sake, when they track him down he won't be beating her or anyone (outside of jail) for awhile.

he was always zipping around soi 4 on his motorcycle, by the way, which he regularly parked inside nana plaza.
