It is certain, guys- if you have a U.S. passport and visit Thailand more than twice a year, you'll go on a watch list. Doesn't matter if it is for business, you'll still go on the list. If you travel with a laptop and absolutely must have porn or porn-like pictures on it, either learn to encrypt your files or scrub the files with an industrial-grade shredder before returning to the U.S. The "random checks" are going to increase and you can be in for a lot of inconvenience over stuff with a consenting adult if she happens to look young. The only times (two) I have had tons of questions has been in Seattle. In my experience, the immigration folks there are the most aggressive and "thorough" in Amereka.

Being previously charged with child sex crimes probably is what got the close scrutiny. I normally have about a dozen BKK stamps in my passport before I ever finally return back to the USA for a short period. Never a problem.

I've been hassled at SFO before, inbound, but the last time I came back to the USA through there (in June) I was whisked through with lots of polite smiles and so forth. Shocked the hell out of me... (I had sent a email to the State Department a year before that complaining about the rude behavior of one of the officers that was stamping the passports. I didn't see him around this time). - Balls

The US government also monitors various internet forums to find people looking for underage sex. Then they find the person’s name from the ISPs, and track their travel movements to places overseas where underage sex is common. The son of Walter Schirra (one of the original 7 Mercury Astronauts) was caught that way. “On Nov. 6, 2004, ICE agents arrested Walter Schirra at a San Francisco airport as he was about to board an Eva Airways flight to Thailand where he allegedly intended to solicit sex with underage boys. A search of his luggage revealed photos of shirtless 12-to-14-year-old Asian boys, large amounts of candy, as well as prescription drugs and other aids designed to enhance sexual pleasure. ICE agents also executed a search warrant at Schirra’s residence, where they initially found approximately 15-20 images of child pornography on his computer and seized computers and computer media for further analysis. The arrest was the culmination of a three-month investigation by ICE. During the investigation, agents discovered Schirra had traveled to Thailand in May 2004, and planned to travel there again in November 2004.” Not mentioned in the above article is the fact that during the three-month investigation they found Shirra on a forum asking about locations where he could find underage boys. Schirra has been sentenced in San Francisco to 42 months in prison for child pornography. I think it good that BK has banned posts relating to where one might find underage sex, sometimes disguised by perverts as warning others of where it exists (supposedly in order to avoid it, but actually designed to tell others where to find it). It is important to strictly enforce such rules in order to force those perverts to look elsewhere for such information, and to let the Feds know that no one comes to this forum to find such things.

Just one proviso to the above. Because you're on a U.S. watch list, it doesn't mean you'll necessarily be hassled at Customs. "Repeated visits to Thailand" is still a low level designation and if Customs is busy, you may whisk right through. There are thousands and thousands of Americans who make multiple trips to Thailand a year and all males within a certain age group end up on the list. Same if you visit Cambodia or Vietnam. There are similar lists for countries in Latin America, but that has to do with drug smuggling. My company wrote a letter to the TSA and Customs stating that I travel to Thailand on business and it helped to avoid hassles, but such a letter doesn't get you off the watch list. Evil

Hell, I am hassled each time I return to the US because I list my residence as Singapore. Most of the wannabe cops working in Homeland Security want to know why as an American am I residing in Singapore and what is wrong with the Good Ol' USA. I tell them that my grevences would fill a small novel...

I came back to the US through seattle in july (just moved here from chicago) and was asked at immigration why I was in thailand (vacation), getting the "1" on my card, then at customs I was sent to another line where the agent put my bag through an xray machine. He asked if I had any food in my bags (no) and what was the reason for my trip (to see my GF, "good reason" he replied). My bag came out of the machine and I got an ok to go out.

WTF? a) What business is it of theirs where an American decides to set up residence? b) Has nothing to do with grievances (though, that's a good one), but really with the US guaranteed 'pursuit of happiness' thing, wouldn't you think. It has to do with this thing called 'The Bill of Rights' and is somewhat related to another thing called 'The Constitution', but I'm hazy on all of this. c) One of the great freedoms that the USA provides, is the right to leave the country and set up residence elsewhere, as well as the right to complain about civil servants at any level, and have those grievances (!) responded to. Seriously, you'd think these people have nothing better to do.
