Winning the hearts and minds of the locals isn't a liberal thing, it's the way wars like this are won. Way back in the 1770s a rag tag group of home boys kicked the butt of the worlds strongest, mightest and most experienced military power this planet had seen up to that time.
In the 1960/70s a group of little SEAsians never once whipped the worlds strongest military power yet won the war.
Military might is only good for fighting a standing army.
The situation in the south of Thailand will not be won by the military, unless you go to the "kill them all and let Buddha sort them out" mentality.

winning hearts and minds ain't a liberal thingy per se, it's something occupying armies do after the battle is won and want to secure the territory, something that the American army, for all their awesome firing power, haven't quite mastered yet.
On the other hand, what feeble minded liberals do, is wanting to believe something despite mounting contrary evidence. I don't quite get the link between the battles you mentioned and the situation in S. Thailand, but who knows there might be one. In terms of history your "way back in 1770...." is barely five minutes ago in our time. Perhaps a more apt (and shall we say more glorious) uneven encounter is the Battle of Thermopylae. Follow the link, it makes quite an interesting read, especially how events are inextricably entertwined together and leading to unexpected war outcomes.

16 die in tit-for-tat South attacks

Eleven soldiers were killed late Thursday in a bomb attack and ambush by militants in the South, while five worshippers were shot dead inside a mosque.
An army pick-up truck carrying 12 soldiers was first hit by a roadside bomb and then ambushed by Islamic rebels in Yala province, said Colonel Akara Thip-piroj, an army spokesman.
All but one of the soldiers were killed by the blast or when the ambushers came out of their cover and shot each of them in the head, Col Akara said. One ranger survived, although it was not immediately clear how. He is in criticial condition in a local hospital.
Krisada Boonracs, the province's deputy governor, also reported the ambush.
Yala is one of three insurgency-torn southern Thai provinces, along with Narathiwat and Pattani, bordering Malaysia.
At least five young men were shot dead by gunmen in a separate incident in the South, the army spokesman said.
The men were killed while they were praying at a mosque in the Saba Yoi district of Songkhla province, which is near Yala.
"The victims were all men in their 20s. They were killed inside the mosque," Col Akara said, but did not give further details.
A bomb attack at a busy market in the Saba Yoi district on Monday killed four people, including two children, and wounded 23.
Thursday's deadly attacks capped a day of violence in Thailand's restive South, where two other people were shot dead and nine soldiers injured in bomb blasts earlier in the day.
More than 2,200 people have been killed in a separatist insurgency in the southern region since January 2004.
The military-installed government, which came to power after the Sept 19 coup last year, has launched a series of peace-building measures but violence has only escalated.
The Thai military currently deploys some 30,000 troops in the three restive provinces and plans to send more soldiers in a bid to quell the ongoing violence.

Once again a peaceful nation is attacked by Muslims.
Lets get the facts correct here,, the Muslims in south Thailand consider themselves Muslim Malay NOT Thai. The thai government has offered them free passage across the border to Malaysia on many occasions but they have refused.
Read a book called " Thai Tattoo"and you will learn something of what the border towns are used for by these Halal abiding (joke) Christian and Budhist hating morons. Just think they follow a religion who's leader married a 12 year old girl,, now for me thats a pedaphile.
Lets look at the real problem,, MONEY,, yes its always money.
A Suez canal like project,for the lower part of Thailand has been an economical viability for many years,,,
This is the real problem,,, if this canal went ahead Malaysia with its fanatical Muslim base, would try to push their border NORTH up to the canal and share the profits.Singapore, although moderate, would see that their port would no longer get the business it once did, if this project became a reality, and therefore would likely back the Malay Muslims.
Australia would back the Thai's,, Cambodia, Phillipines and Vietnam etc, wouldn't care less,, the USA is too busy in Iraq and the Europeans are too tied up getting their economic Union togther to care
Simply stated,, a canal that would save the worlds economies BILLIONS of dollars and reduce green-house gases SUBSTANTIALLY is being held to ransom by a few thousand beliggerent, followers of a man who married a 12 year old girl. ( Once again I state, surely that makes him a Pedaphile).
Oh what a sad world we live in.
