Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 17 April 2007 :- Heavy traffic clogs major roads in Bangkok =============================== Heavy traffic clogged several major roads in Bangkok last night as an estimated 150,000 people made their way to the Mor Chit bus terminal from the provinces after the Songkran holiday. Another 250,000 passengers are expected to arrive at the bus terminal today. Transport Co acting managing director Wutichart Kalayanamitr said inter-city buses, expected to make more than 1,000 trips to bring people back to the capital, will be parked in a specially-designated area to prevent traffic jams. Mr Wutichart said he was certain there would be enough buses to serve travellers and no one would be left stranded at provincial terminals. Assistant police chief Adul Saengsingkaew said highway police were mobilised to ease traffic congestion on major roads, especially from the North and Northeast. Pol Lt-Gen Adul said last night that inbound traffic on the Asia Highway, the main route to the North, was building up in Sing Buri. Similar congestion was seen on the Friendship Highway to the Northeast in Saraburi's Muak Lek district. In Nakhon Ratchasima, the traffic on the Friendship Highway slowed in the afternoon and was heavy all evening. Traffic on the highway is expected to be even heavier today, which is the last day of the long Songkran weekend. Prat Boonyawongwirote, permanent secretary for public health, said more than 4,000 emergency teams had gone out on 8,309 rescue missions over the past five days of Songkran, or roughly one trip every minute. Suvarnabhumi airport director Serirat Prasutanont said the airport recorded an additional 70,000 passengers during the Songkran celebrations and most were Thais travelling overseas.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 18 April 2007 :- Songkran soaked with unruly acts ========================= Despite government warnings, a lot of people continued to misbehave during the Songkran celebrations which ended yesterday. During the past few years, government authorities have taken stern action against Songkran revellers who attacked passenger buses with plastic bags filled with iced water. A ban on high-pressure water guns also helped reduce injuries among celebrants. Recently, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration banned the use of powder in the tourist area on Khao San Road and young people were urged to dress properly. A strong campaign against alcohol consumption was also launched to minimise the number of road accidents and quarrels. This year, water trucks were barred from entering all roads in the Rattanakosin area of Bangkok. All these measures were meant to encourage Thais and tourists alike to celebrate the Songkran festival in a safe and orderly manner. Despite the ban, several pickup trucks filled with Songkran revellers could be seen roaming Bangkok streets during the past five days. These trucks were fitted with large water jars and passengers were forced to hang on precariously to the railings. Sometimes these passengers jumped onto the streets and threw water at passers-by. Many revellers set up roadblocks and ambushed passing motorcycles with water bombs. We hope the authorities concerned will come up with more stringent measures to ward off these acts of misbehaviour next year. Songkran is a time for joy and celebration, and we can do it in a more decent way.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 18 April 2007 :- Hard to curb all holiday excesses ======================== Apparently, during the Songkran festival nearly everything was under control. The Interior Ministry must be pleased that the number of traffic casualties during the holiday season turned out lower than the target. Inspired to revive traditional Songkran costumes, the Culture Ministry also succeeded in encouraging girls not to wear spaghetti-strap tops. Instead they opted for two-piece swimsuits underneath a thin light-coloured shirt which, once wet, allowed everyone to see through to the sexy swimsuit. The Tourism Authority of Thailand must also be pleased with domestic tourism spending during the holiday season. The exact figure will be released today, but gauging from the empty streets in Bangkok, nearly everyone travelled out of town, while provincial people also took trips. But the Culture Ministry might be displeased with the unsuccessful ban of "coyote dancing", where girls dance along to extra-loud music in flesh-exposing outfits. Even little girls, like these two in the photo, were encouraged to join the dance. Worse, they boogied in front of a Buddha image. The disgruntled must also include the police, who failed to reduce alcohol consumption at water-throwing scenes. In fact, alcohol companies set up booths, so buying booze was as easy as going to a convenience store. No wonder drunk-driving is listed as the prime cause of casualties during the holiday season. Does it surprise you that the number of casualties was still lower than last year? I guess the Grim Reaper also took a summer break, too.

I drove on 3 consecutive nights from a remote village to Udon Thani, plus the return journey in the mornings, at a (fast) driving distance of aprox 1 hour each way, during Songkran. I saw at least 20 of these supposed Police Checkpoint Points on each leg of the journey, a total of aprox 60 Checkpoints. I was never stopped once - and that is me a mad farang in the heart of the top of the list area for accidents etc. I know I am a good driver, but I had had a tipple or three and surely as a farang I should have been stopped. In fact on several occassions I saw the Police drinking themselves !! No wonder the accident tables in the BP an Nation always read the same every year. The only way to cut accidents is to ban the use of motor cycles between 3pm and 10am the next day for the whole of the Songkran festival - sorted.
