WHy would the private sector being armed stand in the way of a military coup? If the majority of the population is in favor of regime change, no one's going to shoot anyone.
Plus, if tanks drove up Pennsylvania avenue, ain't no one going to object.
It's all in how it's done, not *if* it's done.
I find it very interesting and telling how the military repeatedly apologizes to the people for the inconvenieces caused, and how the troops are wearing yellow.
Thaksin's done, like a goose.

done like a goose, maybe crazy enough to board a plane to bangkok, doubt it, but would be interesting to see what they do, take it down with a missile?, I guess hes going to cry on the shoulders of his friends in singapore, wonder how temasek management feels now??? seems to be the shittiest investment they took in ages, ten whacks with the cane for each of the board members, according to singapore law seems to be apropirate

I don't see how at 37.8 B/$ it took a beating. Last time I was in LOS it was 42 B/$. Oh well, just wishful thinking that the girls would be dirt cheap!

CNN reports that the Army started to put the pieces in place for this coup as early as July 20th when 100 mid-range officers loyal to Taksin were re-assigned.
Then there was the 'assassination attempt' by the Army last month. Could have this not been a real attempt but a message to the PM to get out of town?
Finally there has been all the talk over the last 10 days of a pending retirement.
It looks to me that Taksin had got the message a while back and has been planning to pull a 'Marcos'. The coup allows him to do it gracefully without losing too much face but unlike retirement will not give him an opportunity to un-retire.
IMHO this talk of letting Taksin participate in the Election is the Army's way of appeasing his supporters and probably means nothing...
