It seams it is not clear if the Police will support the coup. Thaksin has strong support from them as he was one of them. Crunch time will be in the next few hours, keep your heads down. Best hope is that both the military and the Police agree and no fighting breaks out.

... clearly that is affecting tourism in Thailand, some safe conscious tourists are taking the matter in their hands and leaving Thailand to go back home. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,20444422-662,00.html What a loss for the Thai national economy, that guy's action is inflicting a severe blow to the tourism industry. I'm going in next week and if the coup has cleared some riff raff off the streets, so much the better. Anyone knows when Thaksin is due back to Thailand? or if goes back at all.... Sarge

...whether or not this affects tourism... ...it won't stop me shortly taking my 4th trip in 4 years....what with bird flu, tsunamis, bombings...and everything that has happened...nothing...will ever...put me off travelling to Thailand... Thailand has a habit of overcoming adversities...this won't be any different...

I have reservations to go back on the 19th of October and am confident this will all be cleared up by then. The problem is that everyone at home will think I am crazy for going there. I guess I just won't tell them where I am going.

Some thoughts from the homefront (USA). I called the wife as soon as I heard the news. Her father is Thai military and in one of the outlying provinces. He had no idea but had been called in for a meeting with the "big boss" of that province. I think it was still unclear what was going on. I helped to spread the news as my wife immediately called her family and woke them up. They were shocked and concerned to say the least. That province is very much a thaksin support zone. I believe it is possible that not 100 % of the Army is behind this move and the pro-Thaksin crowd could mount an effort to give him power back. Not sure if this will happen but it is on her mind. She is concerned for her father. LS

If the army starts fighting among themselves, that's bad news. If the army gets rid of corruption and the terrorists, that's good news. I just hope they don't start enforcing ALL the rules!

Quote: from Peter on 2:55 am on Sep. 20, 2006 Checked with old friend, a very, very senior officer thai navy: Swindle and fraud to be ended. Situation to be returned to normal.
What? Swindle and fraud are normal in Thailand - always have been, always will. Thaksin might be out, but it is a sure bet that things will pretty much be same, same no matter who replaces him. Sad but true - just a different set of pockets to line.

Quote: from BlueHawaii on 3:52 pm on Sep. 19, 2006 CNNMoney reports "Thai currency takes a beating So far little ripple effect after the baht sinks, but investors who remember Asia's currency crisis are watching." I don't see how at 37.8 B/$ it took a beating. Last time I was in LOS it was 42 B/$. Oh well, just wishful thinking that the girls would be dirt cheap!
When I read those headlines, I was expecting to read about a major drop of the baht against the dollar, and my mind started racing, thinking that maybe this is when I should retire and move to LOS. Alas, it was only a very small drop. Back to work.
