Quote: from which doctor on 1:44 am on Feb. 2, 2004 Of the 10 cases identified in Viet Nam, 8 have died. that's a pretty hefty mortality rate.
Bear in mind that influenza is far harsher on the very young and the very old, and most of the mortality comes from that demographic. That's just NORMAL influenza. Unless we know more details about the ages and consitutions of the victims, the numbers mean little. I do agree that if the disease jumps the shark, and we have human-to-human transmission, we are looking at a different scenario - do bear in mind, though, that human transmission is easier to control, than animal transmission in the wild (migratory birds) - but quarantine will be interesting, at least. It's got some of the locals spooked too. My TGF was plainning on hitting Chatuchak market Sunday, but her friends all bugged out on her. They were worried about the high concentration of chicken food vendors there and the proximity of so many people. I got an earfull of this on the phone, as it screwed up her day and she sat at home watching the paint peel on her apartment walls instead (translates to: "teelakja, why you not come Bangkok now? I lonely..." ). - Balls

True. the numbers are not adjusted for age, and there are host factors that are not known. I don't know what sort of mortality rate you would expect, and I hope there will not be enough data to give a good estimate. Hong Kong saw an outbreak in 1997 with a crude mortality rate of about 33%, (6/18) still pretty bad. Most concerning, however, is the tendency of type A influenza viruses, of which avian flu is one, to mutate and be able to genetically recombine with other viruses that infect reservoirs such as pigs, and chickens. Sort of a genetic mix and match. If, among the present cases, the mode of transmission is determined to have been human to human (the last two deaths in Vietnam are still being studied), or if you start seeing cases spread among humans, then it means the virus has mutated itself in a very nasty way. Humans, because this is a virus that their immune systems don't normally 'see', would be an especially vulnerable population, at least in theory. The good news is that this virus has probably been present in chicken populations in Asia for at least 8 months or so, with so far little bird to human transmission even though there have probably been hundreds or even thousands of exposures. If this is true, then it means that the virus has not been very successful at making the jump to humans. Lets hope it stays that way.

From Stickman's weekly:- On the ground, many folks have been steering clear of chicken and eggs. Schools have taken chicken off the menu and at least one restaurant in a 5 star hotel has taken all chicken dishes off the menu. Even a somewhat modest streetside Isaan food restaurant where I ate during the week had taken chicken off the menu. Asking the waiter about the availability of chicken he replied, "you mean you are not scared? No-one else wants anything to do with chicken at the moment"!

I live in Phuket and a guy who lived across the road from me died last week from the chicken 'flu. Quite a shame, really. because he used to give such lovely eggs. By the way, 'flu is short for "influenza" which (I believe) is Spanish for being under the influence of evil spirits. They used to think that when someone had the 'flu.
