a military coup in the US is highly unlikely, as the private sector is heavily armed, one of the few good reasons for the right to privately own arms.
There are several other reasons why this will not happen in the US:
1. The US Military has always been under firm civilian control (Secretary of Defense and the President). The President is the Commander in Chief, so he is directly in charge of the military and they have been trained to take direct military orders from him.
2. The US has no king that the military can pledge allegiance to after a coup. If the military ousted the Prime Minister and the King, they would not have the necessary support of the people to pull it off.

That you will not have to worry about. The US has an election this November and odds are very strong the party who oppose Bush Jr. will control the commitee to subpeona the White House. He has loads of troubles ahead, including impeachment hearings (the US press is being mum about that until they know who really wins THAT election).
If the Democrats did win a clear majority in either house of Congress (which remains to be seen), then they could hold some kind of hearings, but their subpoena powers against the executive branch would be limited.
If the Democrats held “impeachment” hearings against the President (ludicrous IMO), then the backlash against them would be so great that they would get wiped-out in 2008. It takes 2/3 of the Senate to get a conviction of an impeachment charge, so there is no way they could be successful anyway.

Yep..woke up to the News here in Oz a couple of hours ago.
The wife is listening to Thai radio via the internet and emailing me updates here at work.
So..Wednesday 0700hrs Bangkok Time Thai radio is saying (as per the wife's translation)
... on internet to listening Thai radio program. They have news every step.
At this stage The situation's heard commander (Pol. Sonthi Bonyarakarin)
give 3 problic notices.
1st : Call convene a meetingl: All government department leader, every
carreer today 20th Sept. 2006 at 9.00 am.
2nd : Proclaim that today is public holiday,to make things easier ( I think)
3rd : Proclaim : There are 4 commander in charge now for handle situation.
* The news also said on 24.00 am last night. The King call for commanders 's
report. To tell him what they are doing (I think)

One thing I don't understand about Thai politics in general, and the coup in particular is that in most countries the opposing forces are of different political ideologies (capitalists, communists, socialists, etc). I can't figure out exactly what the differences between the various factions are in Thailand.
This does not look good for the airport opening on time.

I'm at work - it has done wonders for the traffic. Only 10 minutes from Sukhumvit to Sathorn. Absolutely no sign of any military on the way here.
