when are you guys going to get it in your head that not only is the tourist impact rather irrelevant at only 8% of the GNP, but the sex tourist portion of that is not even a blip on the radar. If only 8% of Thailand's revenues is derived from tourism, you can bet that sex tourism probably represents 1-2% as a total. Time for people to recognize how insignificant we are to the Thai economy in general (I didn't say the sex industry, just our representative impact on it).

Daffy, I don't want to get into a big debate but you might want to study economics a bit. Even a 1-2% decline in the GNP can drive recession. An 8% decline would be catastrophic. And I think you actually want to assess the impact on the GDP as in this debate value derived by services or investments abroad, which the GNP includes, would be irrelevant. Of course, I could be wrong.

wanderingsam - point well made, and taken. My issue is simply with some farang continually maintaining how important 'we' are to the national Thai economy, when I will maintain that if that segment of 'tourism' were to go away, or driven away, the Thai economy in general won't even have a sniffle over it -- as the 1-2% (if at all) vaccuum created by this 'loss' would quickly be made up by an increase in regular tourism, and especially in increased tourism from Japan and China (or drink prices will simply increase by an additional 10%). I will maintain that the *farang* influence is not as much as certain farang make it out to be, and is actually, in fact, decreasing as Chinese and Japanese tourism increase (as well as Thai middle-class, as much as there is one, is expanding).

Just look at neighboring countries and you will have an idea of how much tourism means to Thailand, not to mention expertise from expat engineers, IT, logitics managers, constuction managers etc.

Quote: from don5252 on 5:36 pm on Jan. 4, 2007 hey Finchy, will try to word this carefully, don't want to motivate people who like to kill or bring the wrath of mr alan out, but I can't agree a cheap ass penny pinching backpacker on Khao San Rd. has more economic impact on LOS then we do, upper class innocent young people are more newsworthy but to take N.P. & S.C. off the map and the money we bring in, well, lets just say it wouldn't be good, also I am concerned and disappointed Thai officials have come up with nothing
My point is that if np or sc are bombed it will be viewed as a lot of prostitutes and whoremongers killed, and nobody will care too much. If Khao San or one of the backpacker islands is attacked then there will be lots of 'respectable' tourists killed. There will be stories in the papers of some nice middle class kid, taking a year out from studying, to backpack around Thailand and was blown up by evil terrorists. That will have a big impact on the image of Thailand as a safe destination, and will lead to a big drop in tourism. A story in the paper of some old fat, balding guy in a singha vest and socks and sandals who came to Thailand to pay for sex with girls in their late teens would hardly generate the same headlines, and would not have the same affect on tourism as the view would be that the terrorists are targeting sex tourists and 'bad' people.

How much?

Those aren't tourists, and I doubt their impact would fall under 'tourism'.

You may want to update your impression, and your numbers. The number of Chinese tourists hitting Thailand has been steadily rising since 1998, and continues to do so. http://www.hotel-online.com/News/2006_Nov_18/k.THC.1164075755.html http://203.150.20.55/beijing/sino-thai%20tourism.html http://www.chinadaily.net/english/doc/2006-01/04/content_509166.htm Japanese not shabby either. Anyone have number for farang visitors in those same times?
