Australian Travel Advice for Thailand as of this morning (Wed 20th)....In light of the very uncertain political situation and apparent military-led takeover of the Government, we strongly advise Australians to reconsider their need to travel to Thailand until the situation is clarified.
Australians in Thailand should exercise extreme caution. You should avoid concentrations of military personnel or military activity.
You should avoid demonstrations and political rallies as they have the potential to turn violent. You should stay indoors, monitor the media, and follow the instructions of the local authorities.
Passengers intending to transit Bangkok airport should check with their airline beforehand.
Staff at the Australian Embassy have been advised to exercise caution and not to send their children to school until the situation on the ground is clarified.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's latest army putsch looked more like coup-lite on Wednesday with no violence and foreign tourists seemingly oblivous to the troops and tanks roaming the streets of Bangkok.
"We heard something was going on and we just watched a little bit on CNN," 22-year-old Israeli Yael Rachmani told Reuters on Khao San Road, Bangkok's famed backpacker terminus.
"Nothing to worry about. We are used to the situation."
Thai troops seized control of the sprawling capital of 10 million people on Tuesday night, ousting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra while he was in New York.
Tanks and armored vehicles swiftly took up positions at key points across the city, while television stations broadcast a brief statement declaring martial law and apologizing "for any inconvenience".
Some restaurants and shops closed in the initial confusion, but for most of the night it was business as usual in Bangkok.
With no curfew, bargirls continued to serve up cold beers along Patpong, the notorious strip of go-go bars.
Foreign news channels such as CNN and BBC were taken off the air after several hours of broadcasting news of the coup.

lets hope the baht takes a battering, iv'e got lots of pounds to buy them.
on another note i'm booked on the 1st and I know the airlines won't change outbound dates except for special reasons does anyone know if this is one of them,
can say want to be with family and spend some nights in
bkk, while the cowards scarper the BG's will lower the price,
well that's my plan for the coup

My taxi journey to work went by smoothly, only one noticeable fact....
Absolutely no Police to be seen, not a single traffic cop. Those annoying little men who screw up traffic far far more than they help it are not out today.
The word amongst some of the more informed people I work with is that the Police are against the Army in this one and that outcome of that will be what decides the fates in the days / weeks to come.
far, far more of the Thai staff here than I expected.... maybe 40%, and some of the overpaid farangs who should know better are cowering in their beds.... wankers
