Quote: from expatchuck on 2:41 pm on Jan. 6, 2007 Let's take a multiple choice test, just for the record. 1. Taking of the US Embassy, Tehran...1978-79 2. Bombing of US Embassy, Beirut. 63 killed...4/18/83 3. Bombing of US Marine Barracks and French compound, Beirut. 242 Marines and 58 French killed...10/23/83 4. TWA hijacking, Rome to Athens. 1 killed...6/14/85 5. Achille Lauro hijacking. 1 killed...10/7/85 6. Airport attacks in Rome and Vienna, 16 killed...12/27/85 7. TWA flight 840 bombed en-route to Athens, 4 killed...3/30/86 8. Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, 259 killed...12/21/88 9. Bombing Israeli Embassy in Argentina, 29 killed...3/17/92 10. World Trade Center Bombing, 6 killed...2/26/93 11. Bombing of USMTM, Riyadh, 1 killed...11/13/95 12. Khobar Towers Bombing, Saudi, 19 killed...6/25/96 13. US Embassy bombings in East Africa, 301 killed...8/7/98 14. Attack on USS Cole, Yemen, 17 killed...10/12/2000 15. World Trade Center attacks, NYC and DC, 3025 killed...9/11/01 16. Car bombing in Bali, 202 killed...10/12/02 17. Chechen rebels seize Moscow theater, 244 killed...1-/23/2003 18. Truck bomb attacks on compounds in Riyadh, 34 killed...5/12/03 In addition to these, we have had a second Bali bombing, the Chechen school take over in which over 350 died (mostly children) and more suicide and car bombings than I care to list. The multiple choice test is: Which group is primarily responsible for these actions? a. The Parent Teacher Association from the Helena, Montana, school district? b. Disgruntled residents of the Golden Acres Rest Home in Ocala, Florida? c. Pattaya bar girls unhappy with the 2 am closing times? d. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir? e. Young Muslim men between the ages of 18 and 45? If it quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck and smells like a duck, then my assumption must be that it is a duck.
In addition to all those Muslim fireworks one should never forget Madrid (190 people died) in 2004 and London (38 people died) in 2005, shocking bombs carnage. As I said in earlier posts is too early to point fingers at likely culprit/s, we should all have a clearer idea in due course. What is nauseating to see the junta to immediately score a political point, in total disrespect for the families and friends of the victims. Aided by people who still hold a grudge against Thaksin; if some need explaining why I defined him smart operator, they should study how a Chiang Mai policeman 1st became a telecommunications magnate, filthy rich beyond imagination (by Thai standards) and then moved to politics, raising to (almost absolute) power, winning 2 landslide elections etc… then either they live in cloud cuckoo land or open their mouth before engaging their brain. Either case they ain’t worth my time, or anyone else’s for that matter. It’s interesting to see that the self appointed junta is subtly shifting ground and hinting that the bombing maybe the work of disaffected/rogue elements in the Police force. National police Chief Kowit Wattana job in on the line and be made a convenient scapegoat. Sarge

… - investment lost ~ 30 % + since late December 06, rumours over rumours + un capable government institutions … - people to have their pampers full of shit due to a bunch of toy bombs, unbelievable. Tonight I’ll jump onto a plane to join this melodrama. Hopefully Tulips not have placed the brown ones in front off – need a total brain wash without being disturbed.

Speaking to my TG, she says the police are not exactly delighted with the current military junta taking power. Under Thatskin the police were able to carry on with their various corrupt money making activities at all levels without the government interviening. Not so under the new regime - with the new order actively trying to curb police corruption. So it seems the police would have reason to upset the current leaders, likewise, they would have good reason to dicredit the current police chief

Report from bangkok Post dated Wednesday 10 January 2007 - Police say 9 bombs, not 8, hit city ========================== Nine bombs, not eight, exploded in Bangkok and Nonthaburi at the New Year, the chief of the Bangkok bombing investigation team Pol Lt-Gen Panupong Singhara na Ayudhya admitted yesterday. The latest finding was unveiled as the organisers of a Rain concert decided to postpone the show set for Feb 3. It was the first postponement of an international event after the blasts. Rain, whose real name is Jeong Ji-Hoon, is one of the most popular South Korean pop singers in Thailand. Pol Lt-Gen Panupong, also assistant national police chief, said investigators had learned about the ninth bomb after the owner of the premises where the bomb exploded reported the blast to police a few days ago. Fearing that news reports about the blast could hurt his business, the owner also pleaded with police not to disclose information about the ninth bomb, said Pol Lt-Gen Panupong. The owner was concerned that panicked customers might shy away from his premises, added the chief investigator. Pol Lt-Gen Panupong declined to unveil further information about the ninth bomb, saying he was not authorised to give information to the media. Only the Internal Security Operations Command was authorised to release information about the Bangkok bombings. The latest finding was forwarded to the Council for National Security yesterday. Previously, police had concluded that seven bombs hit Bangkok and another one exploded in Nonthaburi on the night of Dec 31 and the early hours of Jan 1, killing three people and injuring 42. A source in the Metropolitan Police revealed that the ninth bomb blast was at the Major Cineplex Ratchayothin in the Phahon Yothin area. A cinema and shopping complex security guard found a suspicious black bag left unattended in a fast food outlet and then removed the bag from the outlet's front area and placed it in a back room, while waiting for further investigation. After a short time, the bomb exploded, damaging the outlet's electrical circuit breaker and causing a blackout in the cineplex's retail area but not in the cinemas. There were no casualties, and none of the customers were alarmed as they mistook the noise for an exploding power transformer, said the source. The owner only alerted Phahon Yothin police on Monday, the source said. A CNS source said six suspects were captured by one of the security cameras at the premises and all would be brought in for questioning.

flik Posted on 8:35 pm on Jan. 6, 2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ...Speaking to my TG, she says the police are not exactly delighted with the current military junta taking power. Under Thatskin the police were able to carry on with their various corrupt money making activities at all levels without the government interviening. Not so under the new regime - with the new order actively trying to curb police corruption. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaking to a couple of Bangkok taxi drivers around New Year they both said things were worse for them with the police under the new regime. Getting stopped for BS reasons and having to buy their way out had increased. Only two guys opinion of course and even if correct could actually support what flik's GF says - if the new Govt is cracking down on major corruption then police are returning to "bread and butter" petty stand-overs to maintain their living standards. Would be interested to hear TPE II latest observations on this. Enjoy.

Quote: from Mel Gibson on 11:50 am on Jan. 5, 2007 Chinese tourism has faultered,, big drop in 2003 and not so good these days.
Quoting statisics from 2003 when we are in 2007 is useless when it comes to China. The year to year changes in China can often take other countries 10 years to accomplish. Chinese tourists view Thailand as simply a first trip out, so any reduction of travel by that particular nationality to Thailand would be due to the desire to travel to other horizons, not because of any travel interest. Bombs are something else, as usual.
