Latest word on the street (ie taxi drivers, establishment owners, those to be affected) : The 'bai sung' has not yet been issued: that is the order that must, theoretically, be delivered by the police to each establishment re notification of change in closing times, as happens on election days. People are generally getting sick of dictatorial Thaksh_t; the economy is generally stagnant (the only ones benefiting from the current 'boom' are those in power, or those closely related and or connected. Noticed how quiet the streets are for this time of year?? Business isn't exactly bussling. The taxi's are saying they will all go broke if 12am is enforced. There are just too many people reliant on the late night entertainment industry for this fo be successful.

Thanks for the updates. What I don't get, with as many people afected, why don't they just overturn the law? As far as I know, all it takes is 50,000 signatures in order for 'the people' to overturn any legislation - thus, 50,000 signatures should be easy to come by, don't you think? Of course, legislation can only be overturned, if it actually goes into effect and becomes law, which does not seem to be the case so far. On the other hand, don't all of those people being affected have a right to vote? When are the next elections? Harry

This thread started with the 1 March closing issue and not ended up with F_cking politics. Give it break and get back to what matters, "Bar time in Bangkok", which is a lot more important by any standards.

In case you haven't been keeping up on current events, but 'Bar time in Bangkok' *is* a political issue, and that is why it is being discussed in this manner. We all want to know what is happening tonight, and what happens to the open/close times, but the reason behind why we're even having this concern and discussion *is* political in nature, and it's also what's behind the answer. Spoke with a few bar owners in nana plaza and they are opening as usual tonight as no change has been advised, a huge petition was handed in containing over 50,000 Thai signatures along with another petition containing in excess of 200,000 foreign signatures, the foriegn signature petition was rejected, maybe the Thai one has had some effect, general feeling in nana is the whole things blown over, no changes, but TIT so keep your eyes open !

Gotta love some of thse suggestions from an article in the Bangkok Post: Eleventh hour tips for outsmarting the midnight crisis Some suggestions and thoughts regarding what should be a drastically-altered nightlife scene during the month of March and perhaps well beyond. This impending comatose period, while bad for businesses, will certainly not represent the death of partying. The irony is that with some concerted organisation there could be more fun to be had. - Do what the government says and stay home! But invite all your friends over and make March a month of house parties _ just think, a few hundred house parties across the city will certainly have the police and despondent neighbours clamouring for a return to the good ol' days of 2am closings. Better yet, pool some money with friends and rent a house exclusively for parties, a den of vice known only to a few... - Go to Chiang Mai! The nightlife there has taken off in the past few years, and because it's one of four provinces currently in need of zoning, the city is currently exempt from the midnight policy. According to Pim Kemasingki, editor of Chiang Mai's Citylife magazine, bars inside the moat have been forced to close down at 1am in the past year, but outside the moat, 2am is common. These hours should continue to be the norm until the city is zoned later on. - Go to Singapore for a weekend! Or even KL. As Bangkok tightens its grip, these world cities are loosening theirs. Could this be part of a grand plan to promote AirAsia? Conspiracy theories abound... - But think twice before rushing to Silom Soi 4! Perhaps the hippest strip of clubs inside any of the zones, the already overcrowded in-zone place will have trouble if there's a midnight influx. Many of the small clubs here are at capacity on the weekends already. The bars here better be prepared with their door policies. - Check out new areas! One relatively unknown area to check out inside the zone is Ratchada Soi 4. This collection of bars should be open until 2am. Also, follow the whispers as more after-hours venues (already increasingly common) will spring up. - So much free time on your hands from midnight to 2am? Go buy more bootlegged DVDs! Let the government know that if it's not one thing then it's another... - To be honest, the nightclub scene in Bangkok, while more expansive, was getting a bit tired. Same music, same MTV atmosphere, same rich kids' showy pretentiousness and increasingly expensive drinks. Perhaps a more interesting scene with more live music venues might develop from this unfortunate turn of events? Can RCA be reclaimed from the teeny boppers by bringing in better music? - What Bangkok needs anyway is more "social" and less "seen"...would anyone lament the death of Bangkok's increasingly shallow my-mobile-is-my-best-friend, SMS-style of hanging out? Speaking of vices...

Get ready for a piss test and a shakedown if you are anywhere other than Patpong or Ratchadapisek after 12.00? That is what I was told! They will use it to wear people down gradually. Not sure, lets see?

Quote: from CiaoCiao on 8:20 am on Mar. 1, 2004 I'll graciously accept that apology now, thank you. , most appreciative of how too much poon sometimes distorts the powers of observation.
Apology? You must be dreaming. What would make it you deserving an apology? Have I insulted or offended you wrongly? Anyway, on the underlying matter, I notice you read me literally -yes, actually there were only 3 paragraphs in the guy's previous post. But..... no problem. After all perception is reality. And reality is perception. Oh! and there is cynicism alright. But there is also something else: sarchasm.
